More than a decade after its release, the historical fantasy series Camelot is being hailed as the perfect binge-watch for Game of Thrones fans. The 10-part series, which first aired on Channel 4 in 2011, features a stellar cast including Jamie Campbell as King Arthur and Eva Green as his vengeful half-sister Morgan.
Based on Classic Literature
Camelot is based on Thomas Malory's 15th-century book Le Morte d'Arthur. The series follows King Arthur (Campbell) as he struggles to create a better kingdom, but faces opposition from his ambitious half-sister Morgan (Green), who believes the crown should be hers and uses dark magic and scheming to destroy Arthur.
Modern Take on a Legendary Tale
A synopsis describes the series as taking "a new and contemporary approach to the classic telling of this historic and legendary tale." It adds: "The modern retake on Camelot entwines politics, romance and magical encounters as we follow King Arthur on his struggle to create a better kingdom under his rule." The show comes from the creative team behind landmark series The Tudors and Life on Mars, as well as the critically acclaimed film The Departed.
Fan Reactions and Cancellation
Over the years, viewers have praised the series, though many express disappointment that it only ran for one season. One fan wrote: "Have just watched the 3rd episode of Camelot, Camelot is a good show, it's improving each week, it has a good cast, great set locations and some good fight scenes." Another commented: "Awesome Show. An awesome show but a complete bummer they cancelled season 2! Well worth the watch, it's just unfortunate that it aired at the same time as Game of Thrones, otherwise it probably would have gotten a better rating."
A third viewer described it as "awesome, beautiful, breathtaking, magnificent, majestic, mind-blowing, moving, nerve-racking, gets you mad and overwhelming." Another added: "I'm so sad that this did not go beyond 1 season... I have watched all of the episodes multiple times. I love the music, the love story, the conflict, the acting and actors, the plot, everything."
