England captain Harry Kane celebrated the win over Mexico with his wife in the stands, as the Three Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the tournament co-hosts at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday night.
Jude Bellingham's Historic Brace
Jude Bellingham became the first player to score a brace at the stadium since Diego Maradona’s goals against England 40 years ago, with both being scored before half time. Mexico clawed one back before the break, which was followed by nationwide panic as Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute.
Harry Kane's Penalty Heroics
Fortunately, Harry Kane scored his sixth goal of the tournament on the hour mark after Anthony Gordon was brought down in the penalty box. Nine minutes later, the England captain gave away a penalty of his own, resulting in a nervy last half an hour, which they managed to see out despite being a man down.
The final whistle was celebrated raucously by the travelling England supporters, who once again belted out Wonderwall by Oasis in front of the exhausted yet ecstatic players. In attendance were also several of the Three Lions stars' girlfriends, fiancés and wives.
WAGs Reactions on Social Media
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s wife, Megan, had initially posted a clip from the players’ family’s section of the stands on her Instagram story ahead of kick-off. She captioned it: "Let’s go," along with a love heart. That turned to jubilation after a nail-biting two hours, having reposted her husband’s celebratory post on her story with the caption: "No words for your magic tonight." She followed it up by sharing a picture of her kissing the shot-stopper in the stands.
Tolami Benson, Bukayo Saka’s fiancé, was also left delighted after the Arsenal winger set up Bellingham’s first goal with a sumptuous cross. Saka was taken off in the 56th minute after Quansah’s red card. Benson posted footage of the post-match scenes for her 300,000 Instagram followers to see of her in the stands, where Mexico supporters were pouring and throwing drinks on the England section from the tiers above. She was unfussed, however, as she also shared a clip of her section singing Angels by Robbie Williams in celebration.
Finally, captain Kane’s wife, Kate, posted a selfie after the victory on her story of her looking delighted. She captioned it: "Let’s gooooo England!!! WHAT A TEAM," along with a St George’s flag. She then posted a picture of her sitting in the stands with Kane, who is now the fifth all-time goal-scorer in World Cup history, with the couple smiling ear to ear.
As always, the England WAGs are expected to be in attendance for the upcoming clash with Norway on Saturday, where they will cheer on the Three Lions as they look to reach the last four.
