House of the Dragon Fans Decode Helaena's Sinister Prophecy

House of the Dragon fans believe they have deciphered the sinister meaning behind Helaena Targaryen's latest prophecy. In a recent episode, Helaena (Phia Saban) examined a caterpillar on a leaf and studied a book about butterflies, telling her mother Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke): "This is strange. It's not the season." The book's page featured an illustration of a lethal butterfly from Missandei's homeland of Naath, with text stating: "They are said to cause death to people around them while living but so far I remain alive."

Fan Theories on the Prophecy's Meaning

Viewers flocked to Reddit to speculate. One fan proposed that Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) has claimed the throne too early, leading to her downfall, as the people might have been more receptive later. Others suggested the prophecy could relate to Sheepstealer being captured prematurely by Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell), the deaths of Rhaenyra's young sons, or even a meta reference to the episode sequence. The fan concluded: "Given how much the series focuses on Rhaenyra, I lean towards the first one."

A second Redditor remarked: "Someone on the reddit mentioned how it's not Rhaenyra's time and she came too early to claim the iron throne." A third offered a darker theory about winter and the White Walkers: "[T]hat somehow the dragons and their presence is suppressing the walkers. As more of the dragons die it's giving more power to the rise of the darkness beyond the wall that will bring the long night."

Butterfly Effect and Book Connections

The butterfly imagery may also reference George R.R. Martin's since-deleted blog post, where he warned that omitting Helaena's youngest son Prince Maelor from the show would create a detrimental "butterfly effect." In the source material Fire and Blood, Maelor is a toddler in Season 3 and meets a tragic fate: smuggled from King's Landing by Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) along with Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), he is later killed at Bitterbridge. Helaena, already grieving another child, takes her own life after learning of Maelor's death.

The book's description of the lethal butterfly hints that Rhaenyra may be the deadly force at the story's centre, with those around her perishing one by one. Fans familiar with Fire and Blood know Rhaenyra's grip on the Iron Throne will be short-lived, implying Helaena foresees the Blacks' premature arrival and fleeting rule.

What's Next for Season 3

House of the Dragon has already diverged significantly from the novels, so viewers will need to wait to see if Maelor appears. The series airs on Sky Atlantic, NOW, and HBO Max UK & Ireland on Mondays.
