One of the best Oscar-winning historical war epics ever made, Glory, is airing on Channel 4 this weekend. The 1989 film, directed by Edward Zwick, tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army's first African American units during the American Civil War.

At the 1990 Academy Awards, Glory received five nominations and won three Oscars, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Denzel Washington. This was Washington's first of two acting Oscars; he later won Best Actor for Training Day in 2001. The film also stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, with Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman in supporting roles.
