Mum Stunned by Neighbour's Cheeky Request After Sharing Paddling Pool
Mum Stunned by Neighbour's Cheeky Pool Request

A mother was left gobsmacked after her neighbour made what she described as a "rude" and "cheeky" request following her generous offer to let the neighbour's children play in her garden paddling pool during a heatwave. The incident, shared on Mumsnet, has sparked widespread debate about boundaries and entitlement.

The Generous Offer

The mum, who lives near a block of flats, set up a paddling pool and splash toy in her garden to help her own children cool down during the sweltering conditions. She extended an invitation to families from the neighbouring flats, whose children attend the same school as hers. The flats have a small shared grass area, but it is not fully enclosed and is described as "a bit overgrown" and "messy."

The Cheeky Request

After allowing the neighbour's children to use the pool on previous occasions, the mum was approached on the school run by one of the mothers, who asked if her kids could come over again that day. However, the mum wanted a quiet afternoon and declined, suggesting Friday instead. The neighbour responded, "But it's boiling!" and then asked, "So you won't be there at all? Can we use the garden/pool on those days?" The mum refused, saying she didn't want them there every day, especially when she wasn't home. The neighbour tutted and walked off.

Online Reactions

The Mumsnet post, titled "[Am I Being Unreasonable] to say no to neighbours using my garden daily during heatwave?" received hundreds of responses. One user commented, "You're not being unreasonable at all, she is rude to even ask. If she lives in a flat and doesn't have a garden that's not your problem." Another said, "Give her an inch and she'll take a mile. Perhaps the flat dwellers could tidy up their own shared garden instead." Many labelled the neighbour "cheeky" and "entitled," with some suggesting the mother fit a lock on her garden gate. At the time of writing, 98% of Mumsnet users voted that the mum was not being unreasonable.
