In a head-to-head taste test of digestive biscuits from major UK supermarkets, Aldi's own-brand option outperformed the iconic McVitie's, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10 compared to McVitie's 9 out of 10. The budget supermarket's biscuits cost just 59p, a saving of £1.29 over McVitie's £1.88 price tag at Asda.
The Test Criteria
Mia O'Hare, Senior Spare Time Reporter, tested digestives from Lidl, M&S, Asda, McVitie's, and Aldi, evaluating texture, flavour balance, and overall enjoyment. The biscuits were assessed for hardness, crumbliness, and how well they paired with a cup of tea.
Lidl and M&S Disappoint
Lidl's digestives ranked lowest with a 2/10, described as tasting more like a Rich Tea biscuit than a classic digestive, with little flavour. M&S digestives scored 5/10, being too hard and chewy, difficult to break apart by hand.
Asda and McVitie's Mid-Range
Asda's version (65p) earned a 6/10, noted for being very crumbly but sweeter than others, which the reviewer found acceptable. McVitie's, the market leader at £1.88, scored 9/10 for its distinctive flavour and perfect tea-dunking qualities.
Aldi Takes the Crown
Aldi's digestives (59p) achieved a 10/10, praised for their ideal texture—neither too hard nor too crumbly—and a perfectly balanced salty-sweet taste. The reviewer concluded that the combination of quality and low price makes Aldi's offering the best choice.
