Gardening expert Benjamin Vanheems is urging households to retain their egg cartons this month, highlighting three ingenious ways to repurpose them in the garden. Known online as GrowVeg, Vanheems points out that while families typically discard numerous egg cartons annually, these items can be remarkably useful for horticultural tasks, reducing waste and enhancing plant growth.
Chitting Potatoes for an Earlier Harvest
According to Vanheems, one of the most popular applications involves using egg cartons to sprout or chit potatoes before planting. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends sowing potatoes from March through May, making now an ideal time to begin this process. Chitting allows potatoes to develop sprouts prior to being placed in soil, which can lead to an earlier and more productive harvest.
Vanheems explains: "Each compartment in an egg carton is perfectly sized to hold seed potatoes securely. You can place them on a sunny windowsill or a greenhouse bench to encourage sprouting, ensuring they remain stable and protected during this critical phase."
Egg Cartons as Plug Trays
Another practical use for egg cartons is serving as substitute plug trays, thanks to their plug-sized spacing. Before using them in this capacity, Vanheems advises gardeners to pierce holes in the cartons to prevent disintegration when wet. This method provides an economical and eco-friendly alternative to commercial plug trays, aligning with sustainable gardening practices.
Growing Carrots with Innovative Techniques
Vanheems also recommends using egg cartons for cultivating carrots, offering two distinct approaches. The first method involves soaking the carton to remove the base of each compartment, creating space for root development. The cardboard can then be planted directly into the ground, where it acts as a natural mulch.
The second technique entails placing the egg tray on top of the soil, making holes in the base, sowing seeds into them, and covering with potting mix. The RHS notes that early outdoor carrot varieties can be sown now for harvesting between May and November, making this an opportune moment to implement these strategies.
Preventing Drying Out for Optimal Germination
Vanheems cautions that egg cartons can dry out more quickly than traditional plug trays, so gardeners should spray them regularly with water. To mitigate this issue, he suggests placing the sown carton in a bread bag, seed tray with a dome lid, or propagator to create a humid, warm environment that retains moisture and accelerates germination.
He elaborates: "This setup fosters a snug microclimate that reduces moisture loss, keeping conditions ideal for seed sprouting. It's a simple yet effective way to enhance germination rates while repurposing everyday household items."
