Frozen Iguanas Tumble from Trees in Florida, Prompting Unusual Pizza Creation

When temperatures plummet in Florida, an unusual phenomenon occurs: iguanas, unable to cope with the cold, become stunned and drop from trees. This bizarre event recently inspired a North Palm Beach restaurant to craft a viral pizza topped with the reptile's meat, blending local wildlife issues with culinary curiosity.

Cold Snap Triggers Iguana Fall and Culinary Experiment

During a recent cold spell where temperatures dipped into the 40s Fahrenheit or lower, green iguanas across Florida experienced cold-stunning. This condition renders the cold-blooded creatures immobile, causing them to fall from trees and become vulnerable to predators or passing vehicles. In response, Bucks Coal Fired Pizza owner Frankie Cecere collaborated with South Florida fishing content creator Ryan Izquierdo to create a pizza featuring bacon, venison, cheese, and bits of iguana meat.

The video, posted on Instagram, quickly went viral, showcasing Izquierdo enjoying the unique dish while Cecere abstained. Although the pizza was made solely for the video and not for public sale, it highlighted a broader cultural moment. Iguana meat is edible and consumed in regions like Mexico and Central America, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture noting that proper processing is essential for safety, though consumption remains a personal preference.

Wildlife Officials Mobilise for Iguana Collection

Concurrently, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) launched a two-day initiative to collect cold-stunned iguanas, removing restrictions on their removal from public places. This effort resulted in over 5,000 iguanas being gathered for humane destruction or potential adoption. FWC Executive Director Roger Young praised the coordinated efforts of staff, partners, and residents, emphasising the success of the collection drive.

However, the FWC issued warnings as temperatures rose, noting that iguanas can recover quickly from cold-stunning and may become defensive, using their whip-like tails and sharp teeth. Social media videos showed Floridians posing with or burying themselves in piles of the reptiles, but officials urged the public to maintain distance to avoid injuries.

Legal and Ethical Considerations in Iguana Management

Florida's anti-cruelty laws prohibit inhumane killing of iguanas in public, but landowners are permitted to humanely euthanise them on their property and even consume them if desired. This legal framework has led to varied responses, from the pizzeria's stunt to more practical removal efforts by trappers like Blake Wilkins and Andrew Baron of Redline Iguana Removal, who were photographed unloading cold-stunned and dead iguanas in Hollywood.

As for the culinary aspect, Izquierdo described the iguana meat as tasting similar to frog legs, with a slightly sweet and pleasant flavour. Despite the viral attention, Bucks Coal Fired Pizza has no plans to make iguana pizza a menu staple, confirming it was a one-off creation for entertainment purposes.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of managing invasive species in Florida, blending environmental concerns with unexpected cultural moments. Whether through official collection drives or viral social media stunts, the fate of these cold-stunned iguanas continues to capture public interest and spark debate.
