Horticultural specialist and CEO of Crown Pavilions, Luke Dejahang, has revealed that a simple watering routine in June can help peonies produce more beautiful summer blooms. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Dejahang explained that watering peonies deeply but infrequently—about once a week—encourages strong root growth and more flowers.
Proper Watering Technique
Mr Dejahang states: "You should water peonies deeply but infrequently, so about once a week is perfect. Watering once a week encourages strong root growth and more blooms." This approach ensures the plants develop a robust root system, leading to healthier and more abundant flowers.
Planting Depth Matters
Correct planting depth is crucial for peonies to bloom. Mr Dejahang advises: "Ensure peonies are planted at the correct depth, with the crown (where the stem meets the root) just below the soil surface, as planting too deep can prevent blooming." Planting too deep is a common mistake that inhibits flower production.
Balanced Fertilisation
While fertilisation is beneficial, overdoing it can backfire. Mr Dejahang warns that excessive fertiliser "can lead to leafy growth with fewer blooms, which isn't what you want." A balanced approach ensures the plant's energy goes into flower production rather than foliage.
Mulching for Moisture and Temperature
Applying organic mulch around peonies helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mr Dejahang recommends a layer of organic mulch to support healthy growth and blooming.
Sunlight Requirements
Peonies thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily to produce optimal blooms. Choosing a suitable location in the garden is essential for their success.
Deadheading for Health and Future Blooms
Deadheading spent flowers is an important task. Mr Dejahang notes: "You should deadhead because it helps to neaten the plant, reduce the risk of fungal infections, and promote a healthier plant ready to flower again next spring." Use clean, sharp secateurs to cut the stem below the faded bloom, above the first set of vigorous leaves.
Planting Peonies for Next Year
For those planning to plant peonies for the following year, Mr Dejahang recommends preparing rich, well-drained soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure. Peonies should be planted in late autumn or early spring in a bright spot. In late autumn, cut back herbaceous peonies to the ground to prevent disease.
