North Liverpool Academy has been accused of being 'cruel' after isolating pupils for wearing PE kits during the recent heatwave, when temperatures reached 28°C. Parents described the decision as 'absolutely stupid' and collected their children from school early.
Heatwave Triggers Uniform Dispute
On Wednesday, June 24, many parents allowed their children to swap their usual collared shirts, blazers and trousers for school-issued PE kits due to 'extreme heat' weather warnings. However, the school punished several pupils for not complying with the uniform policy, placing them in isolation.
Michael Smith, whose 14-year-old son is in Year 9, said his son was in school for 'about five minutes' before being told he would spend the rest of the day in isolation. 'My lad has always worn his uniform and done right by it. But with the weather reaching 35°C (on Thursday), I think there has got to be a bit of leniency and understanding from the school,' he said.
Parents Express Outrage
Another parent, Mark Hodgson, whose two sons were also placed in isolation, said his son had been sent home the previous day after being physically sick due to the heat. 'North Liverpool Academy is like a glasshouse. There are plenty of schools in the area that have allowed PE kits because the uniforms aren't breathable,' he said.
The school is not fully air-conditioned, and Smith noted that his son does not spend much time in the air-conditioned part of the building. 'I understand rules are in place but I think that an extra bottle of water being as far as they're willing to go to make the kids more comfortable is a bit of a joke,' he added.
School Defends Decision
A Northern Schools Academy spokesman said uniform rules were relaxed but students were expected to follow temporary guidelines. 'A small group of students chose not to comply with the temporary policy by arriving in full PE kits instead of the permitted reduced uniform. These pupils were temporarily separated from the main student body in our fully air-conditioned room until the correct uniform could be provided. Any student collections were entirely a parental choice,' the spokesman said.
Public Reaction
ECHO readers branded the school's decision 'stupid' and 'cruel'. On Facebook, Janine Yare said: 'All schools should have an alternative summer uniform. It's bloody ridiculous penalising kids because of the weather.' Kieran Kezza Jackson commented: 'So the school was more lenient on the uniform by saying they could just wear a blazer ... and penalised kids who went in the PE Kit ... No consideration for the children at all.'
Demi Craven said her son's school allows PE kits on PE days, adding: 'If they forced him to wear uniform, he wouldn't be going in.' Christine Radford said: 'Absolutely stupid, at least (they're) at school, a lot of schools are doing PE kits, being in isolation is not good for the children.' Dominic Glazebrook said: 'This is just stupid from the school. It's impossible to defend this decision.'
School Closes After Backlash
Following further consultation, the school decided to close on Thursday, June 25. The Met Office had issued weather warnings, stating that the heat could cause 'population-wide adverse health effects' including potential serious illness or danger to life. Hundreds of schools across the UK closed due to the heat.
