Sally Nugent and Jon Kay shared a heartwarming update on The Princess of Wales minutes into Tuesday's (June 30) episode of BBC Breakfast. Kate Middleton completed the National Three Peaks Challenge over the weekend, raising funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, the hospital where she was treated for cancer in 2024 before announcing her remission earlier this year.
Inspiring Encounter on Ben Nevis
During the 23-mile trek across the highest summits in England, Scotland and Wales, Kate met a father and son duo who were also climbing Ben Nevis. Pete Haslam was carrying his paraplegic son, Ted, to the top of the mountain with the help of 15 friends and relatives. Ted, 11, was diagnosed with an aggressive spinal tumour at age three and was raising money for Molly Olly's Wishes, a children's charity that supports those with life-limiting illnesses.
Jon Kay told viewers: "The Princess of Wales has been praised for completing the National Three Peak Challenge over the weekend to fundraise for the hospital where she was treated for cancer. Along the way, she met two very special people." Sally Nugent added: "It was a father and son who were also climbing Ben Nevis." A clip showed the emotional moment as Kate shared words of encouragement.
Undisclosed Donation and Family Support
Later, it emerged that Kate made an undisclosed donation on Ted's JustGiving page, leaving a message under the name Catherine Wales: "One of the real highlights of the Three Peaks Challenge was meeting inspiring people like you along the way. Huge congratulations to the entire team for raising money for such a wonderful cause. C" Kate described the challenge as an opportunity to "explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back." At the completion in Wales, she was met by her family, including Prince William, their children George, Charlotte and Louis, her parents Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother James. BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
