New Swiss Hotel Brings Hope After Glacier Collapse Wiped Out Village
Swiss Hotel Brings Hope After Glacier Collapse

A new hotel, Hotel Momentum, has opened in Switzerland's Loetschen Valley, offering a glimmer of hope to a community devastated by a catastrophic glacier collapse a year ago. The disaster on 28 May 2025 saw a torrent of rock, soil, and ice engulf the village of Blatten, forcing the evacuation of more than 300 residents before the collapse.

Climate Change Blamed for Glacier Collapse

Experts attribute the glacier collapse to climate change, specifically the thawing of permafrost in the Alps. The instability of the mountainside has raised concerns about the long-term viability of rebuilding the village.

Rebuilding Lives and a Village

Former residents, including hotel owner Lukas Kalbermatten, are working to rebuild their lives. Plans are underway to reconstruct Blatten by around 2030, but the stability of the mountainside and the village itself remains uncertain. Hotel Momentum symbolizes resilience and hope for the displaced community as they look to the future.
