Northumberland County Council has released a photo showing the devastating aftermath of a wildfire that swept through Druridge Bay, a popular beauty spot in the North East. The image, shared as part of the council's 'Love it like it’s yours' campaign, depicts charred land and destroyed vegetation after flames ripped through the area.
Council Issues Fresh Warning Amid High Wildfire Risk
The council has issued a fresh warning to the public as the risk of wildfire remains high across Northumberland due to current high temperatures and dry conditions. Such incidents can destroy habitats, threaten wildlife, and put people at risk, the council emphasised.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid using disposable barbecues, lighting campfires, and discarding cigarettes on the ground. The council also noted that leaving glass on the ground can spark a fire when sunlight is focused through it.
Previous Blaze at Druridge Bay
In August last year, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) spent hours tackling a blaze at Druridge Bay. Four fire crews and a fogging unit were deployed to the scene around midday on Sunday and remained until the end of the day. The fire service stated that the fire was caused by an "out of control" campfire.
Fire Service Urges Precautions During Heatwave
This week, NFRS also issued a warning urging the public to take extra precautions in the countryside as the ongoing heatwave increases the risk of devastating wildfires.
Rob Stacey, Wildfire Team Leader at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The current hot and dry weather means vegetation is extremely vulnerable. It only takes a small spark to start a fire that can spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Many of the wildfires we attend are preventable, and we’re asking everyone to think carefully about their actions when enjoying the outdoors. Simple steps, like avoiding disposable barbecues and campfires, can make a huge difference."
