Bestselling author Jane Fallon has provided her followers with a significant update regarding her breast cancer diagnosis, confirming she has now undergone surgical treatment. The 65-year-old writer, who has been in a long-term relationship with comedian Ricky Gervais for over four decades, shared the news on Instagram this Monday, describing it as a "big day" in her health journey.
Successful Surgery and Recovery Details
Fallon revealed that her operation involved the removal of a tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue, a procedure that she reported went very well. "I had my op this morning. I'm feeling remarkably fine (which is possibly the drugs, and they might also explain why I'm cross eyed in photo 5). It all went very well, apparently," she wrote to her substantial following.
The author shared both before and after photographs from her hospital experience, showing her recovering at home surrounded by the pets she shares with Gervais. With characteristic humour, she noted about her compression stockings: "The popsox have to stay on for 48 hours, so I'm going to style them out as a new trend."
Waiting for Results and Feline Support
While the initial surgery appears successful, Fallon explained that she must now wait eight to ten days for confirmation that surgeons removed all cancerous tissue with clear margins. She acknowledged there remains a small percentage chance she might require additional surgery, but remains optimistic about her prognosis.
During her recovery, Fallon has found particular comfort in her cat Pickle, who she described as her "best nurse ever." She recounted: "She was on me within 30 seconds of my getting home." The author also expressed profound gratitude for the flood of supportive messages she has received since first sharing her diagnosis, stating: "I've honestly been blown away and I'm reading every single one of them even if I'm not quite keeping up with replying."
Diagnosis Journey and Treatment Path
Fallon first disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis on March 12, explaining that it was detected at a very early stage through a routine mammogram she underwent just before Christmas. Despite having no symptoms, a radiographer identified concerning tissue that led to further tests and eventually a biopsy.
"Since then I've had more mammograms, more biopsies and an MRI so they can pinpoint the problem area precisely. It's been a lot, I'm not going to lie," she admitted in her earlier post. At that time, she expressed her eagerness to proceed with treatment, saying she "just wants to get it over with now."
Personal Life and Career Context
The Harrow-born author began her relationship with Ricky Gervais in 1982 after they met while studying at University College London. The couple moved in together two years later and now reside in Hampstead, west London, with their beloved animals. They have been vocal about their decision not to marry, with Gervais previously stating: "We are married for all intents and purposes, everything's shared."
Fallon's writing career began in television before she published her first bestselling novel, "Getting Rid of Matthew," in 2007. Since then, she has released fourteen books, including widely acclaimed titles such as "Worst. Idea. Ever," "Faking Friends," "Just Got Real," and "Queen Bee."
Earlier this year, Fallon offered insights into her personal life, discussing her decision not to have children. "When I was little, you know the cliche of a little girl is they imagine their wedding day and their wedding dress... it was none of that, ever," she explained, adding that her anxiety would have made her an overbearing mother.
Throughout her health challenge, Fallon has maintained her characteristic wit while being transparent about the realities of cancer treatment. She continues to receive what she describes as "incredible care" and remains focused on recovery, currently finding comfort in audiobooks and jigsaw puzzles during her convalescence period.
