Mum's Dental Tourism Warning After Dubai Veneers Disaster

A mother-of-three from Liverpool has issued a stark warning about the dangers of travelling abroad for cut-price dental treatments after her own "nightmare" experience in Dubai left her with a snapped tooth and bleeding gums.

The Costly Decision Based on Social Media Ads

Jade Morgan, aged 36, admits she was swayed by advertisements on social media promoting "bargain" porcelain veneers in the United Arab Emirates. She ultimately paid £2,800 for the procedure, not including the additional expenses for flights and accommodation. Reflecting on her choice, she now deeply regrets the entire endeavour.

"I immediately noticed something was wrong," Jade revealed, describing how her bite felt incorrect the moment the veneers were cemented. "My bite still didn't feel right, but I was told to let it settle."

A Botched Procedure and Alarming Aftermath

The treatment itself raised immediate red flags. Jade recounted to the Liverpool Echo that she did not even meet the dentist she had booked with until the final day. An assistant performed all the preparatory work, including removing her existing composites and taking impressions.

"I only met the dentist on the final day when the veneers were already made and ready to be fitted," she explained. The veneers were attached in under an hour. When Jade complained, she was sent to another clinician who spent nearly two hours drilling her teeth in a failed attempt to correct the issues.

Critical standards were missing. Jade claims she was never provided with temporary veneers, a standard practice in the UK that allows patients to preview the size and shape and request adjustments.

Return Home and Irreversible Damage

The situation deteriorated rapidly after Jade returned to England. Within two weeks, one of her teeth snapped completely in half. She also suffered from persistent bleeding gums.

"Even if the clinic offered to fix it complimentary, I'd still have to pay for flights and a hotel to get back to Dubai," Jade stated, highlighting a hidden cost many dental tourists overlook. "That's thousands more on top of what I'd already spent."

Corrective Treatment and Expert Warnings

Following the tooth fracture, Jade sought help at Liverpool's Dental Excellence, where a comprehensive plan was developed to replace all the faulty porcelain veneers fitted in Dubai.

A dentist from the practice emphasised the structured process followed in the UK: "That includes temporary restorations, allowing the mouth to settle, checking the bite properly and making adjustments over time. Fitting multiple veneers at once without that process can lead to serious long-term problems."

The expert further cautioned: "Patients might think they're saving money, but when you factor in travel, accommodation and the risk of needing corrective treatment back home, it can end up costing far more, both financially and in terms of damage to their natural teeth."

The Rising Trend of Dental Tourism Complications

Jade's ordeal is not an isolated incident. According to the British Dental Association and the British Endodontic Society, 70 percent of dentists report seeing an increase in patients returning from abroad with complications following dental treatment.

Alarmingly, nearly half of these complications involve irreversible damage to teeth. NHS England has also reported spending millions of pounds annually to manage issues arising from dental tourism, placing additional strain on public health resources.

Jade Morgan's final advice is clear: "When you're having the new veneers fitted, you go into that final appointment blind. You're trusting that everything will be right but ultimately, you don't get a chance to see how they look or feel first." She urges others to be extremely wary of offers that seem "too good to be true" and to thoroughly consider the long-term aftercare and hidden costs before embarking on similar journeys.
