MotoGP rider Alex Marquez, 30, sustained a clavicle fracture and a marginal vertebrae fracture near his neck after a terrifying crash at the Barcelona race on Sunday. Marquez underwent successful surgery overnight on his right clavicle, which was stabilised with a plate, and is expected to be discharged from Hospital General de Catalunya on Monday afternoon.
Recovery and reassurance
The Spanish rider, brother of seven-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, reassured fans from his hospital bed via Instagram, stating “Everything's under control” and thanking them for their concern.
Serious incidents at the race
His crash was one of two serious incidents that led to the Catalan Grand Prix being red-flagged twice, with French rider Johann Zarco also snapping his fibula and damaging knee ligaments in a separate pile-up. Several riders, including 2024 MotoGP champion Jorge Martin, expressed concerns about the safety of the race, criticising the decision to have three restarts as “very dangerous”.
