A gentle-natured dog, who has spent his entire five-year life searching for a home, is hoping 2026 will be his year. Balu, a crossbreed with a distinctive, permanent bounce in his walk, is looking for a special family in the UK after being repeatedly overlooked due to his mobility.
A Life of Resilience on the Streets
Balu was rescued from the streets in 2023 and underwent surgery for broken bones in his legs. While the operation was successful and he is not in pain, the experience left him with a unique gait. He moves around very well, but with a cheerful bounce that has become his signature.
Currently living in Portugal under the care of the UK-based charity Miracle's Mission, Balu is described as a loving and affectionate character. He can be shy initially but forms incredibly strong bonds. "When he knows you, he wants cuddles and love and will stick to your hip like glue!" reads a statement from the charity.
The Search for a Forever Home
Despite his wonderful temperament, Balu's adoption profile on the charity's Facebook page has yet to attract a single comment of interest. This is a common plight for animals with visible disabilities, who often wait much longer for a home.
Balu is playful and social with other dogs, even sharing his kennel with a female companion. He exhibits typical pointer traits, being eager and curious to explore outdoors. The charity notes he will need patient support to adjust to life beyond the shelter routine, but his capacity for love is immense.
Next Steps for Balu's Mobility
Veterinarians in Portugal have done all they can for Balu's leg. However, they believe hydrotherapy in the UK could further improve his mobility and quality of life. His new family would be encouraged to explore this supportive treatment.
The process to bring Balu to the UK involves travel fees of approximately £820, which covers the long road journey. Miracle's Mission can arrange a short payment plan while preparing him for travel. The goal is to have him settled in his new UK home during 2026.
