Coronation Street icon Tracy Shaw has made the heartfelt decision to cut her long blonde hair and donate it to the Little Princess Trust as she continues her battle with breast cancer. The 52-year-old actress, best known for playing Maxine Peacock on the ITV soap from 1995 to 2003, revealed her diagnosis last month and has been keeping fans updated on her journey.
A New Step in Her Cancer Journey
On Wednesday afternoon, Tracy shared an emotional post on Instagram, explaining that she had cut her hair in preparation for chemotherapy. She wrote: "Hair will be donated to Little Princess Trust. Another step on this breast cancer journey. Goodbye for now crazy hair. Before chemo takes you away completely, I will enjoy what's left for now." In a video, the actress was seen having her curly hair plaited before it was cut, wiping away tears as she held the plaits in her hands.
Overwhelming Support from Fans
Tracy was inundated with messages of support from fans and former co-stars alike. One fan wrote: "Suits you, madame. Wishing you every strength in the time ahead!" Another said: "I love it and love you for being so brave." A third commented: "You look amazing... it really suits you... good luck with your treatment... I've been through this twice in 5 years... I know how hard it is to take the decision to cut your hair.. I did the same you are in control."
Taking It One Step at a Time
Tracy, who also enjoyed a brief pop career and appeared in shows like Casualty and Doctors, explained her approach to treatment: "I had some great guidance which is 'Don't look up, just keep going to the next base camp, don't climb Mt Everest, just keep taking one base camp at a time.' So today, I'll be going into the hospital and I'll be seeing my wonderful oncologist, and some other wonderful women on this journey with me, and I will face the next base camp."
Support from Co-Stars
When Tracy first shared her diagnosis, several of her former Coronation Street co-stars offered their support. Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor, said: "Sending love to you Tracy." Sally Ann Matthews, who portrayed Jenny Bradley, wrote: "Love you baby girl."
Understanding Breast Cancer
According to the NHS, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK. Treatment often includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted medicines or immunotherapy. The Little Princess Trust provides free wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair due to illness.
