The New York Islanders are donating $150,000 to establish a child support center in memory of Matthew Schaefer's late mother, Jennifer, who passed away from breast cancer in February 2024. The team made the announcement on Monday.
Partnership with Northwell Health
The Islanders, in collaboration with Northwell Health, revealed plans for a dedicated space at the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital on Long Island in New Hyde Park, New York. This center will provide a comforting environment for children to wait while a parent undergoes cancer treatment. Funded by the Islanders Children's Foundation, the Jennifer Schaefer Child Support Center is scheduled to open in October.
Matthew Schaefer's Tribute
Schaefer, 18, is the leading candidate for NHL rookie of the year and has become the face of the Islanders franchise since being selected first overall in the draft. He has frequently spoken about his mother's battle with cancer and her profound influence on his life and hockey career. At the draft in June, the team placed a pink breast cancer ribbon on his jersey, which he dedicated to his mother.
In an Instagram post, Schaefer said: "I think about my mom every day — her strength, her hope and the way she carried herself with a smile throughout her fight against cancer. This work is for her and for every family walking that road. I'm dedicating my time, energy and focus to standing beside them, carrying forward the same strength and fight my mom showed every day."
Owner's Statement
Co-owner Jon Ledecky commented: "By honoring Jennifer Schaefer's memory in this way, we are ensuring that no child has to walk through these difficult moments alone, providing them with a place of comfort, play and support when they need it the most."
