GB News regular Mike Parry has revealed he has been diagnosed with skin cancer, sharing the news during an appearance on the Storm & Alexis Channel 5 show. The broadcaster opened up about his health, describing the diagnosis as 'painful' and expressing confidence in a swift recovery.
Discovery of Growths
Parry discovered growths on both his right eye and nose, with a wound on his eyebrow from an incident over 50 years ago that had reopened but refused to heal. A 'bubble' on his nose, which had been present for a decade, was also found to be cancerous following recent tests. He confirmed he had undergone biopsies, including on his shoulder, and is now scheduled for hospital treatment.
Emotional Impact
When presenter Storm Huntley acknowledged how frightening the situation must have been, Parry admitted it was the word 'cancer' itself that had caught him off guard. Following a thorough examination by his dermatologist, Parry received his diagnosis after what he described as a 'very thorough check'. Additional cancerous areas were discovered during the appointment, though these were dealt with immediately by being 'frozen off'.
He explained: 'These are connected, but at my age they suddenly did a check over and found other things, none of the others were malignant... sometimes you get a little growth, and they can get worse, so they burned a couple of those off, and that was it.' He revealed it was 'quite painful' and lasted several days. The dermatologist had told him that when visible cancer is present, other forms can exist in different areas.
Prompt for Medical Attention
The mark near his eye was what originally prompted him to seek medical attention, as he recalled: 'About a year ago, it started opening up again, and I got it checked, and in fact, it had become cancerous. But I didn't think it was. It got more and more bloody, the make-up team were having more and more trouble hiding it.' Additionally, the dermatologist observed that his growth at the tip of his nose had 'spread up to the top'. Mike was told he would need to lose his right eyebrow during treatment, though Storm reassured him that there are 'wonderful things' available nowadays to restore eyebrows.
Sun Exposure Denial
Alexis then questioned whether he wore suncream and avoided the sun, to which Mike responded: 'I am the least likely victim of getting skin cancer by exposure to sunlight or sunrays,' explaining he's always 'disliked the sun' and would stay away from it during summer. He asked the doctor: 'How could that have happened to me?' But I was told by the doctor that at his age, anyone can develop it.'
Storm & Alexis airs on Channel 5 Monday through Friday from 11:30 am.
