Mum's Nursery Horror: Toddler Found with Wipe Seal in Mouth

A mother has recounted a terrifying ordeal after finding a foreign object in her toddler son's mouth shortly after collecting him from nursery. The incident, described as a "scary experience" by the parent, involved a small beige item resembling a plaster, which she was forced to remove from the back of the child's throat.

Discovery and Immediate Concerns

The mum took to Reddit to share three photographs of the object, which was about the size of her fingertip and featured a distinctive black cross. In her post, she explained, "Pulled this item out of the back of my son’s mouth/throat after picking him up from daycare. It’s very thin and doesn’t have a sticky side from what we can tell." Her primary worry was that her son could have choked on the item, raising serious concerns about his health and safety at the nursery.

Online Community Identifies the Object

The post quickly garnered hundreds of responses from Reddit users, many of whom identified the object as the seal from a packet of baby wipes. One user noted, "It looks a little like the seal to wipes, the seal that comes from the manufacturer to keep all the moisture in." Another agreed, adding, "That is the part of a wipe package that you have to rip off to access baby wipes. It's located underneath the lid of the pack of wipes." This identification helped clarify the origin of the potentially dangerous item.

Nursery Response and Policy Changes

Following the incident, the mum met with nursery staff to discuss what had happened. In an update to her post, she revealed that the nursery admitted full responsibility, confirming the object was indeed a wipe package tab. She stated, "Update from daycare meeting: it was indeed a very productive meeting! I will also preface this with we have had zero complaints about this daycare until this event." The nursery's current policy required removing the tab immediately after opening a wipe pack and disposing of it in the trash, but it was believed the toddler accessed it from the trash area.

As a result, the nursery is implementing a new safety protocol. The mum explained, "They profusely apologised and we had a nice long chat about everything. I will follow up with the director on Friday and they will present all changes that come out of this." The new policy mandates that all wipe packets be opened, inspected, and have their tabs removed outside the classroom to ensure they are "100% baby proof" before entering.

Similar Incidents Highlight Widespread Risk

The incident appears not to be isolated, as a paramedic responded to the post with a recollection of a similar case. The paramedic shared, "Last year I got called for a toddler choking, obviously a very stressful event for everyone. We arrived to find a toddler who looked just fine, whatever she was choking on had either been swallowed or the mother had knocked it out by following dispatcher instructions with back blows." They added that during transport to the hospital, the toddler gagged and revealed the same type of plastic wipe seal, which had been hidden in her mouth.

This paramedic's account underscores the potential choking hazards posed by such small plastic items, emphasising the need for vigilance in childcare settings.

Conclusion and Moving Forward

The mum summarised the experience by saying, "Ultimately this was a scary experience but we all walked away from it and will do better for our kiddos." The incident has led to proactive changes at the nursery, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in the future and ensuring a safer environment for all children.
