NHS GP Recommends 8p Porridge Breakfast to Slash Cholesterol in Two Days
8p Porridge Breakfast Cuts Cholesterol in Two Days, Says NHS GP

NHS GP Advocates Affordable 8p Breakfast to Combat High Cholesterol

NHS GP Dr Punam has highlighted a remarkably affordable dietary intervention that could significantly reduce high cholesterol levels in just two days. During a recent appearance on BBC Morning Live, she discussed a University of Bonn study that found consuming porridge made with water for two consecutive days led to a notable decrease in LDL cholesterol.

The Silent Killer: High Cholesterol Affects Half of Adults

Dr Punam warned the show's hosts, Gethin Jones and Michelle Ackerley, that approximately one in two adults in the UK suffers from high cholesterol, often without knowing it. This condition is frequently termed a 'silent killer' due to its asymptomatic nature in many individuals.

The study revealed that participants who ate 300g of porridge daily for two days experienced a 10% reduction in 'bad' LDL cholesterol. Dr Punam explained, "There has been a recent study that was looking at porridge, making headlines for cholesterol. It was about people having soluble fibre, so porridge and hot water, over a couple of days, seems to make some improvement in your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure."

How Porridge Works to Lower Cholesterol

Porridge is effective because it contains high levels of beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that binds to cholesterol in the digestive system, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream. This mechanism helps clear cholesterol from the body, contributing to improved cardiovascular health.

Dr Punam emphasised that 'slow fibre' foods, such as oats, beans, and lentils, are "fantastic" for cholesterol management when incorporated into a balanced diet. She noted that the benefits extend beyond cholesterol reduction, with study participants also losing an average of 2kg and seeing blood pressure improvements that lasted up to six weeks.

Cost-Effective Health Solution

This health-boosting breakfast is incredibly economical, costing just 8p per serving. For example, Asda sells 1kg bags of porridge oats for 85p, making it an accessible option for many households seeking to improve their health without significant expense.

Broader Health Recommendations

Beyond dietary advice, Dr Punam urged individuals over 40 who have never been tested for cholesterol to schedule a screening, particularly those with a family history of related conditions. She also addressed the use of statins, stating there is no "stigma and shame" in taking these medications long-term.

"Anything that's going to reduce your risk is going to be good for you in terms of your longevity," she added, underscoring the importance of proactive health management.

This research provides a simple, evidence-based method for individuals to take control of their cholesterol levels through dietary changes, supported by medical expertise from the NHS.
