Davina McCall Shares Details of Painful Home Mishap and Health Struggles
Television presenter Davina McCall has candidly discussed a painful mishap at home where she "twanged" her elbow, declaring that such injuries "ruin you" for athletes and dancers. Her comments emerged during a recent conversation with her husband, celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas, as they delved into topics of health and fitness on their podcast.
Elbow Injury and Its Impact on Performance
During an episode of the Making The Cut podcast, Davina revealed the incident occurred when she fell up the stairs, resulting in the elbow injury. She emphasized the severity of such mishaps for individuals in physically demanding professions, stating, "Imagine not being allowed to get injured. The amount of time I spent slightly injured. Like, I fell up the stairs the other day, and I've twanged my elbow, and now, you know. Like, that ruins you if you're a sportsperson or a ballet dancer or a dancer of any kind. It'd be terrible, that."
This insight highlights the challenges faced by performers and athletes in maintaining their physical well-being, where even minor injuries can have significant consequences on their careers and daily activities.
Health and Fitness Journey with Michael Douglas
The discussion with Michael Douglas centered on their shared interest in health and fitness, with Michael explaining his efforts to better understand his body. He mentioned being inspired by retired ballerina Darcey Bussell, who he once styled, noting her deep knowledge of her own anatomy. Michael said, "She told me that she 'knew her body' and that I was 'jealous' and would love to know my body 'properly', adding that ballerinas know 'every single tendon and ligament'."
Michael also shared his positive experience with the workout supplement creatine, which he found "really interesting" for its effects on muscle building and overall well-being. Davina added that creatine had done an "amazing job" for Michael's body after he struggled to build muscle, showcasing their proactive approach to fitness and nutrition.
Davina's Personal Health Battles
Beyond the elbow injury, Davina opened up about her more serious health struggles, including a diagnosis of a benign brain tumour followed by breast cancer. She described the experience as feeling "punched in the face by the universe," especially as it came nearly two years after her brain tumour surgery, just as she was beginning to feel like herself again.
Speaking on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, Davina recounted her emotional journey, including guilt over an incident where she thought she had hurt Jamie, who later discovered he had laryngeal cancer. Jamie, now cancer-free, reassured her, saying, "No! As I always said, if you hadn't have done that, I never would have known."
Davina used this platform to urge others to prioritize their health, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups. She advised, "So just don’t think, 'Oh I had a mammogram recently, it can’t be that'. It could be. So just check, if you’ve got something, go get it looked at. It takes seconds." This message underscores the critical role of early detection in managing health issues.
Reflections on Resilience and Awareness
The conversation between Davina and Michael not only shed light on their personal fitness routines but also highlighted broader themes of resilience and body awareness. From minor injuries like the elbow twang to major health scares, their openness serves as a reminder of the importance of listening to one's body and seeking medical advice when needed.
Davina's experiences, shared publicly, aim to inspire others to take proactive steps in their health journeys, whether through fitness supplements like creatine or regular screenings for conditions like cancer.
