Dr. Oz Compares Medicare Fraud Battle to Surgical Procedure in Washington Role

Dr. Mehmet Oz, the television personality and physician turned government administrator, has described his Washington experience as more complex than surgery. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail following his appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Oz revealed the challenges of overseeing the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

'I'm not a trained bureaucrat,' Oz admitted, humorously noting that his current position feels 'just like surgery but bloodier.' His normally administrative role has transformed into a frontline position in the Trump administration's aggressive campaign against healthcare fraud.

Fraud Czar Vance Leads Coordinated Crackdown

President Trump has appointed Vice President JD Vance as the administration's designated 'Fraud Czar,' partnering with Oz to identify and eliminate systemic abuse. The President recently hinted that fraud 'raids' under Vance's supervision have already commenced in Los Angeles, with particular focus on states governed by what Trump calls 'crooked Democrats.'

Trump anticipates that the financial recoveries from these operations will be substantial enough to potentially help balance the federal budget. This aggressive stance has raised concerns among some Americans about potential disruptions to their Medicare and Medicaid benefits.

However, both Vance and Oz are working to reassure beneficiaries that legitimate claims will continue to be processed. Oz issued a stark warning to fraudulent actors: 'Start running, because we're coming for you.'

Massive Financial Stakes in Healthcare Programs

The anti-fraud task force has identified Medicare and Medicaid as primary targets, given that these programs distribute approximately $2 trillion annually. Recent enforcement actions demonstrate the scale of their efforts:

  • In February, CMS withheld $259.5 million in Medicaid reimbursements from Minnesota due to fraud concerns
  • A nationwide moratorium was implemented for certain medical equipment Medicare enrollments
  • Last week, 221 hospice and healthcare providers in Los Angeles were suspended
  • The previous week saw 70 provider suspensions announced

A source familiar with the task force's operations told the Daily Mail: 'As the task force to root out waste, fraud and abuse ramps up its work, we expect this number to grow exponentially.'

Vance's Personal Experience Informs Approach

Oz praised Vance's qualifications for the Fraud Czar position, highlighting the Vice President's background growing up in disadvantaged communities. 'JD is able to speak very openly and honestly,' Oz explained, 'he's a very upstanding person that has personal experience dealing with many of the issues that America is plagued by, being forgotten.'

Oz emphasized that legitimate beneficiaries should not suffer because of fraudulent activities within the system. He described the challenge of distinguishing between honest claims and abuse: 'You cannot take a meat cleaver to fraud, you have to take a surgical scalpel, fraudsters hide amongst the innocent.'

International Dimension to Fraud Investigation

The administrator revealed that their investigations have uncovered evidence of fraud involving foreign nationals in Minnesota, California, and other states. 'Our job is to make sure that the programs, as they were designed, work well,' Oz stated, 'but don't let these programs, especially the foreign guys take advantage of it. It is terrible to see it weaponized by other countries and foreign nationals.'

Oz criticized previous approaches under the Biden administration, alleging that some states effectively bribed illegal immigrants with healthcare benefits to encourage them to remain in the country. He contrasted this with the current administration's more questioning approach to entitlement distribution.

Whole-of-Government Strategy Against Fraud

Unlike previous anti-fraud efforts that often encountered bureaucratic resistance—including Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency initiatives that Musk later called 'a very interesting side quest'—Oz expressed optimism about Vance's coordinated approach.

'His team is actually excellent,' Oz noted, 'they have lots of experts around them and they're gathering together a whole of government approach.' The task force is collaborating with multiple agencies including the Treasury Department, the Attorney General's Office, and even the Internal Revenue Service.

Personal Connection and Presidential Support

Oz and Vance have maintained a professional relationship for nearly a decade, having campaigned together as Senate candidates during the 2022 midterm elections. While Vance secured his Ohio Senate seat, Oz was unsuccessful—though he now finds his administrative role more fulfilling than legislative service would have been.

The administrator described President Trump as an exceptionally engaged leader who provides crucial support for their mission. 'This president is different than anyone else I've ever worked with,' Oz observed, recounting how Trump once called him and fellow cabinet members during a dinner meeting, then called again immediately after a television appearance the next morning.

'When does he sleep?' Oz recalled wondering, while appreciating the President's hands-on leadership style. 'He is so passionate and such a hands on leader that if you have a problem, you go to him,' he concluded, noting that this support makes their challenging work significantly more manageable.
