Hailey Bieber has spoken openly about the significant health challenges she faced both before and during her pregnancy with son Jack Blues. The 29-year-old founder of Rhode skincare shared her experience on the SHE MD podcast with host Mary Alice Haney and her personal obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi.
Surprise Pregnancy Amid Medical Warning
During the podcast conversation, Hailey revealed that her pregnancy over two years ago came as a complete surprise. She explained that Dr. Aliabadi had previously advised her against becoming pregnant due to a concerning medical condition. The physician confirmed this, recalling telling Hailey, "Don't get pregnant!" before the unexpected conception occurred.
The Uterine Septum Diagnosis
Hailey disclosed that she had been diagnosed with a uterine septum before becoming pregnant. This congenital condition involves a thin wall of tissue dividing the uterine cavity, which can create complications during pregnancy. Dr. Aliabadi explained that uterine septum affects approximately 1 to 3 percent of women and comes with increased risks.
"I had a septum in my uterus," Hailey shared. "Dr. A kept saying, 'Well, we need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue.'"
The condition is categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on measurements taken during ultrasound examinations. Hailey believes hers was moderate, which Dr. Aliabadi confirmed carries particular risks.
Significant Pregnancy Risks
Dr. Aliabadi detailed the specific dangers associated with a moderate uterine septum during pregnancy. Women with this condition face a 25 to 40 percent risk of miscarriage and a 10 to 20 percent risk of preterm delivery. Despite these concerning statistics, Hailey maintained a positive outlook throughout her pregnancy.
"I believe that everything's gonna work out fine," Hailey told her doctor during their discussions about the risks. Dr. Aliabadi recalled responding, "I think so too," acknowledging that luck played a role in the successful pregnancy outcome.
Difficult Labor Experience
Beyond the pre-existing condition, Hailey endured what she described as an extremely challenging labor. Speaking to Vogue in May 2025, she characterized the experience as "the hardest thing I've ever done" and admitted "that s**t was so crazy. That was not fun."
Her water broke at 39 weeks, requiring medical induction. She labored for several hours without pain medication before eventually delivering her son after 18 hours of labor. However, her difficulties continued immediately after birth.
Postpartum Hemorrhage Scare
Following delivery, Hailey experienced a postpartum hemorrhage, a serious complication involving excessive bleeding. She acknowledged that the thought of not surviving crossed her mind during this frightening episode.
"I was bleeding really badly, and people die, and the thought crosses your mind," Hailey revealed. She credited her trust in Dr. Aliabadi with providing some peace during the emergency, stating, "I trust my doctor with my life. And so I had peace that I knew she would never let anything happen to me."
Postpartum Recovery and Body Changes
After bringing her baby home safely, Hailey faced the challenge of adjusting to her postpartum body. She noted significant physical changes, including wider hips and larger breasts, and acknowledged needing to "give herself some grace" about her body not immediately returning to its pre-pregnancy state.
"My body is not the same body that it was before," Hailey admitted, while also discussing her difficulty coping with what she called the "new version of herself" amid ongoing rumors about her marriage to singer Justin Bieber.
The 32-year-old singer recently celebrated his birthday as the couple continues to navigate parenthood with their 19-month-old son Jack Blues. Hailey's candid revelations provide insight into the often-unseen medical challenges that can accompany pregnancy and childbirth, even for celebrities with access to top medical care.
