In a heartfelt and candid revelation, Dame Judi Dench has shared an emotional update regarding her ongoing struggle with a degenerative health condition. The beloved film star, now 91 years old, was diagnosed with Age-related Macular Degeneration back in 2012, a condition that has progressively affected her central vision.
The Impact on Daily Life and Career
Age-related Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of sight deterioration in individuals over the age of 50. While it does not typically result in complete blindness, it can cause permanent and swift central vision loss, making everyday tasks significantly more challenging. For Judi Dench, this has meant giving up driving, a decision she described as "one of the most traumatic moments" of her life. She expressed grave concern, stating, "I just know I'll kill somebody if I get behind the wheel of a car now."
The condition has also forced her to cease activities she once enjoyed, such as embroidery and going out alone. Perhaps most poignantly, she can no longer read, which has profoundly impacted her personal and professional life. However, this limitation has sparked a renewed passion for poetry and memorisation as a means of coping.
