Julia Bradbury's Empowering Health Journey After Cancer Diagnosis
Television personality Julia Bradbury has undergone a profound transformation in her approach to health and wellbeing following her breast cancer diagnosis five years ago. The 55-year-old presenter, originally from Dublin, now prioritises self-care through nutrition, physical activity, and mindfulness, declaring she has "taken charge" of her health.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis and Recovery
Bradbury received her breast cancer diagnosis in 2021, which led to a single mastectomy to remove a 6cm tumour. While maintaining a practical outlook, she has openly shared the emotional challenges, admitting to shedding tears during difficult moments. This experience fundamentally shifted her perspective, with Bradbury now viewing "every single morning as an absolute blessing."
"I want to make sure that I'm in the driving seat, rather than responding to crises," she explains, emphasising her proactive approach to health management.
Complete Lifestyle Overhaul
The former Countryfile presenter's current routine contrasts sharply with her previous lifestyle. A decade ago, her demanding career filming travel documentaries worldwide resulted in erratic sleep patterns, excessive sugar consumption, and hurried meals between commitments.
Now residing in London with long-term partner Gerard Cunningham and their three children, Bradbury has implemented significant changes:
- Adopting a "clean eating" approach with steamed vegetables, fresh berries, and wholesome seeds
- Eliminating gluten and alcohol from her diet
- Completing at least 10,000 steps daily
- Increasing fibre intake and reducing bodily inflammation
- Incorporating regular meditation and gratitude practices
"I completely changed my diet," she reveals. "I cut out gluten, I cut out alcohol, I really started paying attention to my hormones. I've done that under the guidance of medical professionals."
Navigating Healthcare Challenges
Bradbury's health journey hasn't been without obstacles in the medical system. She recalls instances where healthcare practitioners dismissed her questions about lifestyle modifications, with one professional suggesting her diet and drink choices were irrelevant during treatment.
These experiences have made her particularly aware of the gender health gap in the UK, where conditions predominantly affecting women remain under-researched.
"There is no question that women are underserved in the medical world," she states. "We tend to wait longer for treatment, we tend to wait longer for diagnosis, and there tends to be fewer drugs available to us for our conditions."
Additional Health Battles and Advocacy
Alongside her breast cancer journey, Bradbury has managed endometriosis since her initial diagnosis in 2006. She describes the condition as "quite severe" and potentially debilitating, requiring surgical intervention that led to a six-week absence from work.
Recently, she underwent a pelvic MRI through Vista Health's Signs Of Clarity initiative, which encourages people not to ignore their bodies' warning signals. While anxious about potential endometriosis recurrence, the scan revealed her womb to be in good health.
A Renewed Perspective and New Ventures
Bradbury's health challenges have brought increased confidence and self-advocacy. "When you have experience under your belt, I think you do start to trust your instincts more," she reflects.
Remarkably, she now views her cancer diagnosis as having saved her life in many ways, prompting her to create positive affirmations and appreciate life's simple pleasures, from morning green tea to hugs with her children.
This renewed outlook has coincided with new professional opportunities, including her three-part ITV series, Julia Bradbury's Wonders Of The Frozen South, which she describes as a phenomenal experience and long-held ambition.
Through her journey, Bradbury exemplifies how profound health challenges can lead to transformative lifestyle changes and a deeper appreciation for wellbeing, while highlighting important issues in women's healthcare.
