Former Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona has spoken for the first time about a terrifying health scare that left her fearing for her life after being rushed to hospital with suspected stroke symptoms. The 45-year-old singer admitted she has "never been so scared" after her daughter Heidi, 19, noticed she couldn't smile properly while they were watching her eldest daughter Molly, 24, perform in a London play.
The Moment of Panic
Kerry revealed the frightening episode began midway through the performance when she visited the bathroom and noticed her lack of facial movement. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, she recounted: "Heidi was like, 'Mum, what's wrong with your face?' I started panicking. I discreetly left, went to my hotel and asked to see a doctor. I told the staff, 'Something's not right.'"
Emergency Hospital Transfer
When the hotel informed her a doctor wouldn't be available for four hours, Kerry took immediate action by hailing a taxi to St Thomas' Hospital. "I got there, and they said, 'We're treating this as a stroke,' so they blue-lit me in an ambulance from St Thomas' to King's College Hospital," she explained. "They were shining lights in my eyes while my face and speech were getting worse."
The suddenness of the medical emergency shocked the celebrity, who reflected: "An hour ago I was watching our Molly in a play and now I'm being treated for a stroke. What the actual f**k? It just shows how quickly things can change."
Understanding Stroke Emergencies
A stroke represents a critical medical emergency occurring when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted either through blockage (ischemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). This deprivation of oxygen causes brain cells to die rapidly, requiring immediate emergency intervention to prevent permanent damage or death.
Family Fears and Medical Tests
Petrified by the situation, Kerry messaged all five of her children – Molly, Lilly (23), Heidi (19), Max (18), and Dylan-Jorge (12) – fearing she might never speak to them again. "It really, really scared me. I texted all my children and told them I loved them. I've never been so scared in my life," she confessed emotionally.
Doctors conducted extensive tests and CT scans to determine why her speech had become slurred and her facial muscles had stopped functioning properly. While they ultimately ruled out a stroke, the scans revealed concerning findings. "There's a part of my brain that's broken and isn't able to send signals to my face due to stress," Kerry disclosed about her diagnosis.
Ongoing Symptoms and Recovery
The singer has noticed her speech sounds different from what she hears in her head and experiences shooting pains in her head. Medical professionals have recommended speech therapy and facial exercises, assuring her that movement and speech capabilities should return gradually. However, Kerry admitted she's "getting a bit panicky with it" as she navigates this challenging recovery process.
Recent Personal Struggles
This health scare follows Kerry's recent revelation earlier this month about suffering two miscarriages with boyfriend Paolo Margaglione, 33. The unexpected pregnancies occurred while filming Celebs Go Dating, with the couple going public with their relationship in June 2025 and moving in together two months later.
On Paul C Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast, Paolo recalled detecting the first pregnancy: "So Kerry was, unknowingly pregnant at the finale of Celebs Go Dating... I found out in the morning. I could smell it on her, like, weird. I said, 'You're pregnant.'"
Kerry described the emotional turmoil: "And then the thought of having an abortion killed me. It felt like it was made from love... And unfortunately I miscarried and then we tried. And I'd miscarried again, only at four weeks. And I didn't realise how much I wanted it then."
Previous Pregnancy Trauma
This isn't the first time Kerry has experienced pregnancy loss. In her memoir, Kerry Katona: Whole Again, she wrote about a previous miscarriage in 2022 that had actually occurred around 2015. Following the death of her ex-husband George Kay, she had a brief romance with a mystery man and fell pregnant within two weeks, only to suffer a miscarriage that required surgical intervention to remove the foetus.
Understanding Stroke Types and Risks
Ischemic Stroke: Accounting for approximately 80 percent of strokes, this occurs when a blockage in a blood vessel prevents blood from reaching part of the brain.
Hemorrhagic Stroke: The rarer form happens when a blood vessel bursts, flooding part of the brain with excessive blood while depriving other areas of adequate supply. This can result from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), an abnormal cluster of blood vessels in the brain.
Stroke outcomes can be severe, with roughly three out of four survivors experiencing life-long disabilities including difficulty walking, communicating, eating, and completing everyday tasks. Treatment requires urgent medical intervention, potentially involving surgery or tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) drugs within three hours to save patients.
Common risk factors include:
- Age and family history
- High blood pressure
- Smoking and obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Diabetes and atrial fibrillation
- History of previous stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack)
Key symptoms demanding immediate attention include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side), confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, vision problems, walking difficulties, dizziness, loss of coordination, or severe headache without known cause.
