British Lawyer Dies After Turkish Cosmetic Surgery, Inquest Hears of Slimming Pressure in Legal Profession
A young British lawyer who tragically died following Brazilian butt lift surgery and liposuction in Turkey told her mother she felt "pressure to look slim in the legal profession", an inquest has heard. Diarra Brown, a 28-year-old from Wolverhampton, passed away on October 26, 2021, just days after undergoing a four-hour operation at the Private Memorial Hospital in Istanbul's Bahçelievler district.
£10,000 Loan for Surgery After Workplace Teasing
The inquest was told that Ms. Brown had taken out a substantial £10,000 loan to pay for the Brazilian butt lift, liposuction, and an arm lift procedure. Her mother, Daisy Brown, revealed that her daughter had been teased about her weight at work during her legal training, which contributed to her decision to pursue cosmetic surgery. The clinic had reportedly promised the procedures would help her drop eight dress sizes, from size 18 to size 10, restoring her confidence.
Rapid Deterioration and Horrific Symptoms
Just hours after the surgery on October 22, 2021, Ms. Brown began experiencing severe pain, bruising, and feeling cold. Despite reassurances from surgeon Dr. Sevket Gokham Bayam that these symptoms were normal, her condition deteriorated rapidly over the weekend. Her mother described horrendous symptoms including an inability to see, walk properly, or sleep. "She couldn't see as she was in so much pain," Mrs. Brown told the inquest. "She could hardly put one foot in front of the other. Her feet were swollen and she couldn't bend her toes on her left foot."
Medical Reassurances and Tragic Outcome
Mrs. Brown detailed how medical staff continually dismissed the severity of her daughter's symptoms, even as she became unable to wear a seatbelt due to being on all fours in pain. "Diarra could not walk, she was sweating and had a high temperature, was breathless and lethargic and she was in and out of consciousness," her mother testified. "Her eyes kept rolling back. She was aware she was losing consciousness and told me to slap her."
Despite these alarming signs, Dr. Bayham reportedly reassured the family that everything was normal, even claiming he had performed the procedure hundreds of times without a single death. Ms. Brown was admitted to hospital on October 25 for dressing changes, where her condition continued to worsen. She suffered a suspected heart attack and died the following day.
Sepsis Identified as Likely Cause of Death
Investigations revealed that the most probable cause of death was uncontrolled septic shock. Dr. Vanya Gant, a consultant in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases at University College London Hospitals, analyzed post-mortem and medical data, concluding: "Diarra Brown was a healthy young lady who went to Turkey. She suffered a disastrous and very rapid and complete collapse. One of the causes was uncontrolled sepsis and septic shock."
Dr. Gant explained that Ms. Brown's symptoms—including significant hypertension, elevated C-reactive protein, and collapsed white blood cell count—were entirely consistent with sepsis. The inquest heard that Ms. Brown had undergone preoperative tests, including COVID-19 screening, which all returned negative results before the surgery.
Pressure in Legal Profession and Surgical Risks
In a statement read by assistant coroner Kelly Dixon, Mrs. Brown highlighted the workplace pressures her daughter faced: "Before she had the bariatric surgery, she felt there was a pressure to be slim in the legal profession. During her training, she was still overweight and I think she got teased about it at her work."
The inquest continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Brown's death, including the surgical procedures performed, the postoperative care provided, and the communication between medical staff and the patient's family. This tragic case raises serious questions about the risks associated with cosmetic surgery abroad and the pressures individuals face regarding body image in professional environments.
