Man Engulfed in Flames at Queensland Hospital Leaves Patients Traumatised
Patients at a hospital in Far North Queensland have been left deeply shaken after witnessing a man engulfed in flames in the emergency department. The horrific incident occurred at Cairns Hospital in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, around 2am local time.
Witnesses Describe Bloodcurdling Scene
Kelsey Meyers and her husband were seated in the waiting area when the man entered and reportedly set himself alight. Meyers described the event as "bloodcurdling", stating, "The smell, the screams, I will never forget it. My partner tried to shield me, but even in the reflection of a window, I could see it."
She added that the smoke and smell were overwhelming, causing nausea and a desperate urge to escape. Meyers remains traumatised, saying, "Every time I close my eyes, I see that gentleman."
Staff Response and Injuries
A staff member was injured while extinguishing the fire, suffering burns to his hands and arms. Leena Singh, a spokesperson for Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, confirmed the injury and noted that employees have been offered counselling support.
Singh explained that staff quickly moved a small number of people from the main waiting room to a secure area, following established protocols to protect them from physical risk and traumatic exposure.
Hospital Review and Confidentiality
A full incident review has been conducted to strengthen emergency response protocols. Singh emphasised that patient confidentiality prevents the release of further personal details, requesting understanding from the public.
