Measles Outbreak Spreads Across England, Confirmed in All Regions
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a stark warning as measles infections have now been confirmed through laboratory tests in every single region of England. This alarming development comes as the disease, once considered eliminated in the UK, has resurfaced across 50 council areas, with children under the age of 10 being the most affected demographic.
Epicentre in Enfield and Low Vaccination Rates
Enfield in London has emerged as the epicentre of this widespread outbreak, recording 80 confirmed cases so far this year. This area suffers from one of the lowest vaccination rates in the entire country, with only 64.3% of children receiving both necessary MMR jabs by their fifth birthday. Similarly, Birmingham has reported 43 cases, while neighbouring Haringey has seen 15 infections. All three of these hotspots have vaccination rates significantly below the 95% target required to achieve herd immunity, leaving communities vulnerable to rapid transmission.
WHO Strips UK of Measles Elimination Status
In a significant blow to public health efforts, the World Health Organization stripped the UK of its measles elimination status in January, following sustained circulation of the virus for over a year. England alone recorded 2,911 laboratory-confirmed cases in 2024, marking the highest number since 2012. This resurgence underscores a troubling trend of declining vaccination uptake across the nation.
Urgent Warnings from Health Officials
Dr Yimmy Chow from the UK Health Security Agency emphasised the severity of the situation, stating: "Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known, and it will find those who are unvaccinated." The UKHSA has directly attributed the outbreak to falling vaccination rates, with MMR uptake now at its lowest point in a decade. The majority of infections have been identified in unvaccinated children under the age of 10, highlighting a critical gap in preventive healthcare.
