First Dates Star Merlin Griffiths' Cancer Battle and Decade-Long Partnership
Merlin Griffiths' Cancer Fight and 10-Year Relationship

Merlin Griffiths, the renowned bartender from Channel 4's hit show First Dates, is a familiar face to television audiences, frequently appearing on James Martin's Saturday Morning to share his expert mixology tips and culinary recipes. However, behind his cheerful on-screen persona lies a profound personal journey marked by a harrowing health crisis and steadfast companionship.

A Shocking Diagnosis and Grueling Treatment

In 2021, at the age of 51, Merlin Griffiths received devastating news: he was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer. This diagnosis plunged him into an intense 18-month battle against the disease, involving rigorous medical treatments that tested his resilience to its limits. Thankfully, by 2023, Merlin responded positively to the interventions and was declared cancer-free, though he remains under close medical supervision for the next two years as a precautionary measure.

Symptoms and Early Detection Advocacy

Reflecting on his experience, Merlin has been vocal about the initial signs that led to his diagnosis. He recounted to Bowel Cancer UK that his symptoms included persistent abdominal pain and drastic changes in his bowel habits, which he initially attributed to scar tissue from a prior car accident. Emphasizing the critical importance of early detection, Merlin urged the public not to ignore such warning signs. "Pain in your stomach and changes to bowel habits can be symptoms of bowel cancer, and the earlier it is diagnosed the better the prognosis," he stated. "I would urge anyone with any symptoms to see their GP. Don't be embarrassed, they’ve seen it all before. If something doesn't feel right, don't dismiss it and don’t wait."

Unwavering Support from Partner Lucille

Throughout his arduous cancer treatment, Merlin Griffiths leaned heavily on the unwavering support of his partner, Lucille, with whom he has shared a decade-long relationship. The couple, who have a daughter named Alix together, have maintained a largely private love life, but Merlin has publicly praised Lucille's dedication during his health struggles. He revealed to Yahoo that Lucille was instrumental in his daily care, driving him to hospital appointments for radiotherapy, which required attendance five days a week over several months.

"Honestly I wasn't driving throughout loads of that treatment. It was down to Lucille to take me into hospital every day," Merlin shared. "She was holding down the fort here at our pub and looking after our daughter and so on while I was in hospital many times." During his surgery and recovery, which involved weeks of hospitalization, Lucille managed their family and business responsibilities seamlessly, earning Merlin's heartfelt gratitude. "She's been utterly brilliant, utterly brilliant and dealt with it all just like that," he added.

Life After Cancer and Ongoing Challenges

Merlin Griffiths has courageously documented his cancer journey on social media, offering a raw and honest perspective on the lasting impacts of the disease. He confessed to The Mirror that his life has been permanently altered by the experience. "My life will never quite be the same, and anyone that has gone through bowel cancer and the horrific treatment that it involves will understand," he said. "I might look whole, but I'm actually missing about 45% of my insides. It's quite a major amputation internally that I have had."

He now lives with a condition known as Lower Anterior Resection Syndrome, a common long-term effect of bowel cancer treatments that affects bowel function. Merlin highlighted that many cancers have enduring consequences that are often overlooked by the public. Despite these challenges, he maintains a positive outlook, stating, "I still approach everyday with positivity because, what else can I do. It's been difficult but I'm so grateful to be here."

Balancing Television Fame with Pub Ownership

When not gracing television screens on First Dates or James Martin's Saturday Morning, Merlin Griffiths is the proud owner of the Dog and Gun pub, located in Walton near Lutterworth, Leicestershire. This venture allows him to stay connected to his bartending roots while managing his health and family life with Lucille and their daughter. His story serves as an inspiring testament to resilience, the power of early medical intervention, and the profound impact of supportive relationships in overcoming life's toughest battles.
