Mr Motivator Demands Government Action on 'Bed Poverty' as Crisis Deepens for UK Children

The former GMTV star and fitness coach, Mr Motivator, is urging the government to treat 'bed poverty' as a national crisis, as new data reveals a sharp increase in families unable to afford basic furniture for their children. Barnardo's, the children's charity, reports that demand for essential items like beds has surged by nearly 40% in the past year, highlighting the severe impact of ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Barnardo's Reports Alarming Surge in Furniture Demand

According to Barnardo's, beds have become 'like a luxury item' for many families, with the war in Iran threatening to exacerbate living costs further. In the first quarter of 2025, 187 households accessed the charity's services for essential furniture. However, from January to March this year, that number jumped to 261 households seeking beds, cots, tables, chairs, sofas, food, and window coverings—a rise of approximately 40%.

Ruth Welford, Barnardo's head of special projects, emphasised the dire situation: 'Families are still really struggling to meet basic needs—and I can't imagine current events are going to make it any easier. Beds, a fundamental right for every child, have become almost like a luxury item.' She described heartbreaking scenarios, including children sleeping on pallets on the floor, older children squeezed into toddler-sized beds, and beds becoming mouldy in homes without proper floor coverings.

Mr Motivator's Call to Action and Personal Initiative

Mr Motivator, whose real name is Derrick Evans and who resides in Greater Manchester, is lobbying the government to include bed poverty in child poverty planning. He stated: 'I have always hated the fact that it's merged into poverty in general, which means it gets lost. Beds can end up at the bottom of the list for families in a desperate position, and the consequences are enormous.' He highlighted how lack of proper sleep affects children's health, mood, learning ability, behaviour, and emotional stability.

To address this issue, Evans has launched a charity called Mr Motivator's Bed Bank and started a petition calling for formal government recognition of bed poverty. Meanwhile, Barnardo's is collaborating with beds and bedding brand Simba to distribute bed bundles—including mattresses, duvets, and pillows—to children and families in need.

Impact on Education and Long-Term Consequences

Teachers are witnessing the effects firsthand. Leon Evans, head of Year 7 at Canons High School in Edgware, north London, noted that cost-of-living and housing pressures, lingering since the Covid pandemic, force families to relocate far from schools. He explained: 'Often these kids will then have to share a room, won't have a bed to themselves, and get up very early... And so we have students that come to school tired.' He warned that over five years, this problem multiplies, degrading educational equity and opportunities for students.

Government Response and Policy Measures

The Department for Work and Pensions responded by highlighting recent policy changes. The removal of the two-child limit for universal credit claimants, which passed into law this month and takes effect from 6 April, is expected to put 450,000 children 'on a pathway out of poverty' and is described as 'the single most cost-effective measure' to reduce poverty rates. Additionally, the government is expanding free school meals to all families on universal credit from the start of the 2026 school year, promising 500,000 more children will benefit from free breakfast clubs from September, and plans to create 1,000 Best Start family hubs across every local authority in England by 2028.

Despite these efforts, advocates like Mr Motivator argue that more targeted action is urgently needed to address the specific crisis of bed poverty, ensuring every child has a safe and comfortable place to sleep.
