Natasha Hamilton on Perimenopause and Health Battles

Former Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton has candidly shared her personal health journey, revealing that entering early perimenopause and being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition has profoundly impacted her self-esteem. The 43-year-old pop star, who rose to fame as a teenager, described feeling "insecure and embarrassed" as she navigated these significant physical changes.

A Complex Health Battle

Natasha Hamilton explained to The Mirror that approximately twelve months ago, she felt she was "falling apart" while battling perimenopause symptoms. Her health only began to improve when she started Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which marked a turning point in her wellbeing. However, her most challenging period occurred six months after the birth of her daughter Kitty, now two years old, when she was filming a music video while simultaneously dealing with thyroid issues and perimenopause.

Diagnosis and Physical Changes

The singer has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disorder that attacks the thyroid gland and causes hypothyroidism. This condition means her thyroid was underactive and not producing sufficient hormones to properly regulate her metabolism, energy levels, and mood. Natasha confessed that "the version of Natasha now is not what it was pre-Kitty," acknowledging significant bodily transformations after her fifth childbirth.

During the early months of Kitty's life, Natasha barely recognized herself, describing how she would roll out of bed in agony each morning. Her cognitive function was also affected, with slowed recall and difficulty finding the right words during conversations. "I started to feel insecure and embarrassed," she admitted about this difficult period.

Embracing a New Self-Image

Despite these challenges, Natasha has worked to develop a more positive self-perception. She recalled looking in the mirror and telling herself: "Step into your power. You were a young, thin pop star, but that's not you now. You've just had your fifth kid, you've been through life, you've had your battles and you look f***ing great. So what if you have cellulite?" The artist acknowledges she is still on a personal "journey" of acceptance that began after becoming a mother for the fifth time.

Financial Struggles and Recovery

Alongside her health battles, Natasha has faced substantial financial difficulties. She revealed confronting a £250,000 tax bill after leaving Atomic Kitten, which forced her to return to work prematurely and contributed to a mental breakdown. "To pay that tax bill I went back to work too quickly and it had a huge impact on my mental health," she explained.

The singer also disclosed accumulating approximately £20,000 in credit card debt during her late teens and early twenties when credit was "thrown" at her, requiring years of repayment. More recently, she invested heavily in her record label, Morpho Records, resulting in a financially challenging year during which she would wake up "every day crying."

Family Life and Current Situation

Natasha shares her daughter Kitty with husband Charles Gay and has four older children from previous relationships: Josh (23), Harry (21), Alfie (15), and Ella (11). The family currently resides in Chester after experiencing homelessness for seven months, during which they lived in hotels and Airbnbs following a property sale that coincided with mortgage complications.

Reflecting on her journey, Natasha acknowledged that after stepping back from Atomic Kitten in 2004 to address postnatal depression following her second son's birth, she wasn't "mentally and physically able" to continue the work she had loved. She now maintains stricter financial management, paying off her credit card balance monthly while continuing to navigate her health challenges with greater awareness and resilience.
