Parenting Influencer Reveals Trauma After Accidentally Running Over Toddler Son
Parenting Influencer's Horror After Running Over Her Toddler Son

Parenting influencer and blogger Kelly Hopton-Jones has publicly confessed to a harrowing incident where she accidentally ran over her 23-month-old son with her car. The mother, who shares daughter Lily, aged three, with her husband Brian, took to Instagram to recount the traumatic event that she described as the worst day of their lives.

A Normal Day Turns Tragic in Seconds

Hopton-Jones, known online through her blog Hillside Farmhouse, posted alongside images of her son Henry in hospital, revealing that he sustained multiple fractures to his pelvis. She explained that the day began routinely, with plans to take Lily for donuts before a dance performance while Brian stayed home with Henry, intending to meet them later.

"He helped Lily into the car and was waving goodbye between our car and Henry, who was in the garage," she wrote. "In a matter of seconds, our son was run over by our car. I was driving." The situation escalated quickly, with neighbours immediately stepping in to care for Lily as the family rushed to the emergency room.

Medical Updates and Emotional Turmoil

Medical examinations provided some relief amidst the chaos. X-rays of Henry's legs, chest, and neck returned normal results, and a CT scan showed no injuries to his organs or spinal cord. A neurological exam also offered reassurance, with no signs of head injury or impairment detected.

However, the toddler did suffer pelvic fractures that will require time to heal, along with a few minor abrasions. Hopton-Jones expressed her emotional struggle, stating, "I can't even let my brain fully go to how different this situation could be right now. It's so easy to start questioning everything."

Reflections from a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

As a pediatric nurse practitioner with years of experience running her blog, Hopton-Jones delved into the painful what-ifs. She reflected on how a different morning routine—such as Brian going to work as usual—might have ensured both children were safely secured in their car seats.

"Why weren't we holding him. Why didn't I double check before pulling out," she questioned. "We could drive ourselves crazy with the what ifs, and honestly, we are a little bit. But accidents happen."

A Message of Kindness and Learning

In her heartfelt post, Hopton-Jones shared the advice she would give her own children in such a situation, emphasising compassion over self-blame. "It would be a lot kinder than the things we're telling ourselves right now. Accidents happen, and the only mistakes are the ones we don't learn from," she wrote.

Concluding on a note of gratitude amid the tragedy, she added, "We're on the lucky side of a very tragic accident." The incident has sparked widespread discussion among her followers, highlighting the unpredictable nature of parenting and the importance of community support in times of crisis.
