Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to examine the hidden charges that parents encounter when accessing government-funded childcare. Under current rules, eligible working parents in England are entitled to 30 hours of free childcare each week. However, many families report being asked to pay additional fees that can significantly increase their expenses.
What Hidden Costs Are Parents Facing?
These extra costs include waiting list deposits, compulsory add-ons, charges for additional hours, and fees for items such as meals, nappies, and special activities. A recent survey found that more than a quarter of parents cited cost as the main barrier to securing their preferred childcare option.
CMA Response
The CMA has welcomed the education secretary's request and will develop a proposal for a formal review into the early years childcare sector. The review aims to ensure transparency and fairness for families relying on childcare support.
This move comes as part of broader efforts to make childcare more accessible and affordable for working parents across England.
