A tragic incident at an Indian safari zoo has claimed the life of a young veterinarian who was fatally mauled by an enraged pregnant hippopotamus while conducting a routine temperature check. Sameeksha Reddy, aged 27, was performing her duties at the Tavarekoppa Lion and Safari Zoo in Karnataka, India, on Thursday night when the devastating attack occurred.

According to zoo officials and local reports, the veterinarian had completed a standard check-up on a Sun Conure bird around 10:30 PM before proceeding to attend to a 15-year-old pregnant hippo named Hamsini at approximately 11:45 PM. Ms. Reddy was using a thermal camera to assess the animal's temperature as part of her veterinary responsibilities.
The hippo, which was due to deliver within a few days, unexpectedly charged at the young vet immediately after the scanning process was finished. The sudden and violent attack inflicted catastrophic injuries, leaving Ms. Reddy with severe internal trauma to her abdomen and significant blood loss.

Zoo staff rushed the critically injured veterinarian to a private hospital in the Shivamogga district, but despite the efforts of medical teams, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday morning.
