UK Dad's Dental Disaster After £3,500 Turkey Trip for New Smile
A father from Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire says he deeply regrets his decision to travel to Turkey for dental work, after a procedure intended to fix his crumbling teeth left him completely toothless. Jon Denton, 34, spent £3,500 on the trip in January this year, hoping to resolve issues stemming from a serious motorbike accident in 2020 that required his front teeth to be knocked out for medical treatment.
Accident Leads to Dental Decline and Unaffordable UK Quotes
Following the crash, Jon had metal inserted into his jaw during his recovery, which made brushing difficult and caused his remaining teeth to deteriorate. He experienced constant toothaches and could only eat food cut into small pieces. When he sought help from UK dentists, he was quoted around £30,000 for treatment, a sum he could not afford. This financial barrier pushed him to explore cheaper options abroad.
Turkey Procedure Turns Painful as Implants Fail
Jon selected a clinic in Turkey based on positive reviews and a lack of pressure to book. However, upon arrival, he was charged an additional £800, and the process felt rushed. He underwent a six-hour session to have 14 implants screwed into his mouth, followed by another appointment to glue in new teeth. Initially pleased with the results, Jon soon suffered from severe pain and an infection. His bottom teeth fell out shortly after returning to the UK, leading to excruciating discomfort that he described as worse than breaking a leg.
Check-Up Results in Total Tooth Removal and Partial Refund
In March, Jon flew back to Turkey for a check-up, paying £300 for sedation. Instead of repairing the implants, the dentist removed them all, claiming they had failed. The clinic offered him dentures for an extra cost or a partial refund of £2,700, which he accepted. Now, Jon is left without any teeth, unable to eat even soft foods like cake, and has locked himself away at times due to the emotional toll.
Fundraising Effort Launched to Restore Smile
Jon has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for corrective dental treatment. He expressed that the situation is affecting his relationship, mood, and ability to work, stating, It's the worst thing I've ever been through, I wish I could turn back time. While some have had positive experiences with dental tourism in Turkey, Jon's case highlights the risks involved in seeking affordable medical care overseas.
