Exclusive: Young Woman's Persistent Mouth Ulcers Mask Sinister Tongue Cancer
Olivia Donnelly, a 25-year-old from Kent, faced a harrowing health journey after suffering from recurrent mouth ulcers for two years, initially attributed to a weakened immune system, only to receive a shocking diagnosis of tongue cancer.
A Daily Struggle with Debilitating Symptoms
For Olivia, the mouth ulcers became a constant presence, severely impacting her daily life. On some days, the pain was so intense that she struggled to speak, posing significant challenges in her recruitment job. Despite undergoing tests and biopsies with Maxillofacial specialists in Ashford, which initially returned clear results, her condition persisted, with doctors suspecting an immune system issue.
Discovery of a Lump and Devastating News
Earlier this year, Olivia noticed a lump on the side of her tongue that she had never seen before. She promptly contacted her specialist, leading to another biopsy. Within just two weeks of a four-to-six-week waiting period, she received an urgent call to attend the hospital the next day. Olivia recounted the moment: "I knew they were going to tell me bad news, because why would you tell me to come to hospital the next day after two weeks? It was awful." Upon arrival, seeing her clinician, a surgeon, and a nurse confirmed her fears.
Rare Diagnosis and Immediate Concerns
In a state of shock, Olivia learned she had tongue cancer, an exceptionally rare condition in younger individuals. Her first question to the medical team was: "Is this going to kill me?" She explained, "I didn't really know how to react, but when you immediately hear you've got cancer you just think it's game over. You don't hear that many positive stories of people having cancer and I have really bad health anxiety."
Severe Treatment Plan and Recovery Challenges
Further scans revealed the cancer was more severe than initially thought. Olivia requires surgery to remove 40 percent of her tongue, which will be reconstructed using skin from her forearm, along with the removal of several inflamed lymph nodes. The procedure is expected to last 10 to 12 hours, followed by a six-month recovery period where she must relearn how to speak and eat. Olivia shared, "It's going to be quite an intense surgery... my life's going to be put on hold for pretty much six months and summer's pretty much going to be written off for me."
Sharing Her Story to Raise Awareness
After her diagnosis, Olivia posted a video on her TikTok account @Olivia22x22, documenting her experience. The post has garnered thousands of views and over 400 comments, offering support and connecting her with others who have faced similar battles. She said, "I can't even explain the amount of comments I've had from people saying that they've had what I've had and have recovered. It's so reassuring." She has also advised individuals with similar symptoms to seek medical help promptly.
Urgent Warning and Symptoms to Watch For
Olivia is now urging anyone with persistent mouth ulcers to contact their GP or dentist without delay. According to the NHS, symptoms of mouth cancer include:
- A mouth ulcer that lasts more than three weeks
- A red or white patch inside the mouth
- A lump inside the mouth or on the lip
- Pain inside the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking
- A hoarse voice
- A lump in the neck or throat
- Unexplained weight loss
Olivia remains positive, stating, "I'm positive that I will get through it. And, you know, the surgeons have said to me that I'm going to be absolutely fine. And I think it will be something that will stick with me for the rest of my life mentally."
