WWI Shell Found in Patient Prompts Bomb Squad Alert

A bomb disposal unit was called to a hospital in Toulouse, France, after a 24-year-old man arrived with a World War One shell lodged in his rectum. The patient presented himself at Rangueil Hospital on Saturday night, complaining of severe discomfort.

Doctors discovered the military shell during an examination and immediately alerted authorities. The hospital was evacuated at approximately 3am local time, with bomb disposal specialists, police, and fire services attending the scene.

The object was identified as a 3.7cm shell, measuring about 16cm in length. Two bomb squad personnel were required to extract and make it safe. The patient is reportedly recovering well.

How the shell came to be inside the man remains unknown, but French media report that he is expected to be questioned by authorities. This incident follows a similar case in 2022 in Toulon, where an 88-year-old man claimed to have stumbled upon a bomb, leading to a partial hospital evacuation.
