Four Foods to Eat in Wales During Heat Alert, Says Red Cross
Four Foods to Eat in Wales During Heat Alert

The British Red Cross has advised people in Wales to consume four specific foods to stay hydrated as the country endures a severe heatwave. With temperatures soaring to 38°C and a rare red heat alert in effect, the organisation recommends strawberries, cucumber, celery, and lettuce for their high water content.

Recommended Foods for Hydration

According to the British Red Cross, light, well-balanced meals are preferable during hot weather. Foods with high water content, such as strawberries, cucumber, celery, and lettuce, can help maintain hydration and keep the body cool. These options are particularly beneficial as they provide fluids without the drawbacks of certain beverages.

Beverages to Avoid

The Red Cross warns against alcohol and caffeinated drinks during the heatwave. Alcohol can disrupt sleep, while caffeine acts as a diuretic, increasing fluid loss and raising body temperature. Both can exacerbate dehydration risks.

Current Heatwave Conditions

Wednesday marked the hottest June day on record, with temperatures reaching 36.1°C, and forecasts predict a rise to 38°C. The Met Office has issued a red heat alert for parts of southern and central England and Wales, effective from Wednesday morning until late Thursday night. An amber warning covers much of England and Wales through Friday and Saturday. Hundreds of schools have closed, and rail services have faced disruptions.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Matthew Lehnert said: "This is exceptional heat for June with temperature records expected to be broken this week. Red warnings are reserved for the most severe events, and we're expecting significant impacts from this heatwave, with health issues likely, even beyond those who are more vulnerable to the heat." He added that high humidity makes the heat feel more potent, and overnight temperatures above 20°C increase the potential for significant impacts.
