Curry Expert Reveals Slow Cooker Secret for Intense Flavour
Curry expert Dan Toombs, widely known as the Curry Guy, has shared his top tip for creating more intense and flavourful curries at home by ditching traditional pots on the hob. In an interview with The Independent, he recommended swapping to a slow cooker, describing it as the "secret" to achieving the most flavoursome curry you'll ever taste.
Why Slow Cookers Enhance Curry Flavour
According to Toombs, using a slow cooker allows ingredients to melt together slowly, resulting in a more intense flavour compared to rushed hob cooking. He explained, "What you do get from a slow cooker is a more intense flavour, because you're not trying to rush things. You're letting all those ingredients melt together." This method not only boosts taste but also simplifies the cooking process, as slow cookers can be set and forgotten, reducing the risk of burning or sticking.
Benefits Beyond Flavour
The advantages extend beyond flavour enhancement. Slow cookers are praised for their energy efficiency, using little more power than a traditional light bulb, making them an economical choice for home cooks. Additionally, they require minimal effort and cleanup, as noted by brand Spice Pots, which highlighted that slow cooker recipes are healthy, low-fat, and allow ingredients to be thrown in with no oil needed.
Tenderising Meat and Saving Money
For meat curries, slow cooking at low temperatures helps tenderise cuts by breaking down connective tissue, yielding a melt-in-the-mouth texture. Toombs suggested cooking on high for about five hours if time is limited, still achieving excellent results. He also pointed out that slow cookers transform inexpensive cuts of meat, which often have more flavour but require longer cooking times, allowing home cooks to economise without sacrificing taste. "A lot of times, the cheap cuts have the most flavour - the reason why they're cheap is because they take so long to cook. But if you're putting it in the slow cooker, it doesn't make any difference," he added.
