Popular television doctor and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dr Punam Krishan has publicly shared her breast cancer diagnosis after undergoing private treatment, prompting a wave of support from colleagues and fans.
A Doctor's Personal Battle
The 42-year-old NHS GP and BBC Morning Live medic took to Instagram to reveal she received the diagnosis in August 2025. Despite nearly two decades of guiding patients through similar news, she confessed the experience was profoundly different from the other side of the consultation.
"Absolutely nothing prepares you for being on the receiving end yourself," Krishan wrote. "The shock. The fear. The trauma. In that moment, knowledge means very little." She described having a "gut instinct" that something was wrong and used her platform to urge the public to seek medical checks if concerned.
Protecting Family Through Private Treatment
Krishan explained she chose to keep her diagnosis and subsequent treatment private at the time to protect her energy and, "most of all," her two young children, whom she shares with her husband, fellow doctor Sandesh Gulhane. She credited her husband, family, and a close circle of friends for carrying her through the difficult period.
"When something like this happens, you realise very quickly what – and who – truly matters," she stated. Now that her treatment is complete, she decided to share her story, admitting that "carrying it quietly has been heavy."
Strictly Co-Stars and Pink Sisters Offer Support
The announcement sparked an immediate outpouring of love from her Strictly Come Dancing family. Her 2024 dance partner, Gorka Marquez, offered encouraging words, while fellow dancer Amy Dowden, who has also battled breast cancer, sent a message of solidarity, calling Krishan her "pink sister."
Krishan, who was eliminated in the fifth week of the 2024 series won by Chris McCausland, previously credited the show with being "the best fitness journey" of her life, leaving her more toned and energetic.
A Life-Changing Perspective
Reflecting on her journey, Dr Krishan said the experience changed her, taking her to "very dark places mentally" but also clarifying her priorities. "Your health is everything. Not work. Not possessions. Not perfection," she concluded, promising to share more when ready and thanking her followers for their kindness.
Her powerful message underscores a critical public health reminder from a trusted medical professional: to listen to your body and seek early medical advice.
