Rising Threat of Counterfeit Weight-Loss Injections Exposed
As the demand for weight-loss injections continues to surge without any signs of abating, a concerning new poll has uncovered that criminal elements are capitalising on this trend by impersonating legitimate online pharmacies to peddle counterfeit and potentially dangerous injections. The National Pharmacy Association (NPA), representing approximately 6,000 pharmacies across Britain, conducted a survey of 100 online pharmacies, revealing alarming statistics about this illicit trade.
Alarming Statistics from the National Pharmacy Association
The survey found that around one in ten online pharmacies reported their digital presence had been cloned by illicit sellers over the past twelve months. Furthermore, nearly two out of every five pharmacies encountered patients who had inadvertently purchased fake weight-loss drugs within the same period. An overwhelming majority of respondents, precisely 95.2%, expressed significant concern regarding the illegal sale of these injections and the substantial risks they present to public health.
Expert Insights from a Cloned Pharmacy Owner
Sehar Shahid, an NPA board member, obesity specialist pharmacist, and founder of 24HR Pharmacy, was among those whose business fell victim to cloning. Shahid has meticulously outlined seven critical red flags that consumers must vigilantly watch for to avoid falling prey to fake or unregulated weight-loss jabs.
Seven Key Red Flags of Counterfeit Weight-Loss Jabs
- Suspiciously Low Prices: "Prices will slightly differ from one provider to the next, but on average weight-loss medication usually starts from around £130 to £300," explains Shahid. "If you encounter an offer far below this market range that seems too good to be true, exercise extreme caution as the medication is likely not genuine."
- Absence of Proper Consultation: A provider failing to conduct a thorough video or in-person consultation before prescribing is a clear warning sign. "All regulated providers must engage in a two-way dialogue with patients, undertake a full medical history check, independently verify weight, assess existing medical conditions and current medications, and evaluate mental wellbeing, including any history of eating disorders," Shahid emphasises.
- Requests for Unconventional Payment Methods: "If someone asks for a bank transfer, PayPal, or Bitcoin payment, that is usually a red flag," warns Shahid. "Legitimate online pharmacies use regulated payment gateways on their websites for card payments and avoid transactions over the phone or via social media messaging."
- Incorrect or Altered Domain Names: Criminals often replicate legitimate websites with high sophistication. Shahid advises: "Check the General Pharmaceutical Council registration number displayed on the site. Verify the exact web domain name on the GPhC register, as illegal sites frequently add letters or words to mimic real domains."
- Lack of Communication Channels: "Many criminal operations posing as pharmacies minimise or avoid phone contact," notes Shahid. "Patients should be able to speak directly with a professional to address questions or concerns about their medication."
- Cloudy or Discoloured Liquid: "The liquid in genuine injections should be clear. Any cloudiness, unusual colour, or visible particles indicate a red flag, and patients should not use such products," Shahid states firmly.
- Unsealed or Poor-Quality Packaging: "Packaging must always be sealed. Broken seals, discolouration, misaligned fonts, missing batch numbers or expiry dates, or generally poor quality suggest the product is not genuine and may have been tampered with," Shahid cautions.
The Severe Dangers of Using Counterfeit Injections
"All regulated and licensed medications undergo rigorous clinical trials to establish correct dosages, potential side effects, and proper usage," Shahid explains. "With fake, unregulated, or unapproved substances, you have no certainty about what you are introducing into your body. This ignorance exposes users to unpredictable side effects and serious illness."
Moreover, the importance of a proper consultation with a healthcare professional cannot be overstated. "Weight-loss jabs can dangerously interact with existing medications or medical conditions. The damage caused by an unregulated substance can be exceedingly difficult to reverse, posing long-term health threats," Shahid adds, highlighting the critical need for vigilance and adherence to regulated channels.
