Australian musician Kim 'Busty Beatz' Bowers has died at the age of 49 after a battle with breast cancer. The Brisbane-based performer, renowned for her award-winning theatrical production Hot Brown Honey, passed away on Thursday surrounded by family and friends.
Tributes from Hot Brown Honey Co-Directors
In a heartfelt social media post, the co-directors of Hot Brown Honey announced her passing, describing her as 'Our Queen Bee' who 'walked towards the ancestors last night surrounded by family and friends, wrapped in hugs, flowers and tears.' They continued: 'A leader, a staunch sister, a mentor, a maker of beatz, heart rhythms and words that made us stand up and listen.'
The tribute added: 'I know we will continue to create beautiful art together from the dream world, full of joy and cheekiness, built with radical fierce love and a middle finger to the systems. But for now Queen, sleep well, rest.' The family plans to hold a private ceremony, but encouraged fans to 'ask your ancestors to hold her with ours.'
A Legacy of Rhythm and Resistance
The post concluded with a poem from Bowers herself, in which she wrote that she would 'take these unliveable factors' and 'make rhythm.' She continued: 'I'm open up to last, this calling, a heartsong, I'm smitten.'
Bowers was diagnosed with an aggressive form of triple-negative breast cancer in late 2022. Despite her illness, she remained a powerful force in the entertainment industry, having signed her first record deal at just 16 years old.
Impact on Australian Music and Theatre
Australian Women In Music paid tribute, stating: 'Our dear Kim "Busty Beatz" Bowers has moved on, leaving behind a legacy that was as loud, fearless, and transformative as she was. Kim wasn't just a creator; she was a force who used every note and every word to shake the floorboards of our culture.'
They highlighted her dedication to amplifying marginalised voices: 'She spent her life pulling the "unseen" out of the shadows and putting them under the spotlight where they belonged. She made sure no one had to be invisible when she was in the room.'
Outpouring of Grief from Fans and Friends
Social media was flooded with tributes from fans and friends. One wrote: 'A fierce, loving ancestor now. So much love and gentle waves to everyone's hearts. She will be deeply missed.' Another said: 'What a glorious legacy she leaves. Rest in eternal peace, Queen, and thank you for your gifts.' A third added: 'Dearest sis, rest in power! Heart shattered, but still in awe of all you built and the legacy we all will carry on.'
Kim 'Busty Beatz' Bowers leaves behind a powerful legacy of music, theatre, and activism that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
