DWP Offers £458 Monthly to State Pensioners with One Condition

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is providing up to £458 a month to state pensioners who meet one condition: they require personal care or supervision due to a long-term illness or disability. Attendance Allowance, a tax-free, non-means-tested benefit, is designed to help individuals over State Pension age who need assistance with daily living or supervision for safety.

How Much Can You Get?

For the 2026/2027 tax year, Attendance Allowance is paid at two rates. The lower rate is £76.70 per week, which amounts to £306.80 every four weeks, for those who need frequent help or supervision during the day or night. The higher rate is £114.60 per week, equating to £458.40 every four weeks, for individuals who require help both day and night, or who are terminally ill. The benefit is paid every four weeks and is not affected by income or savings, nor is it taxable.

Most Common Condition: Arthritis

According to the DWP, arthritis is the most common condition among claimants, accounting for approximately 35% of all 1.7 million claims. The benefit is intended for people with physical disabilities (including sensory disabilities like blindness), mental disabilities (including learning difficulties), or health conditions that necessitate help with personal care or supervision.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for Attendance Allowance, you must have reached State Pension age and meet the following conditions:

  • You have a physical disability (including sensory disability, e.g., blindness), a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or a health condition.
  • Your disability or health condition is severe enough that you need help caring for yourself or supervision for your own or someone else's safety.
  • You have needed that help for at least six months.

Additionally, you must:

  • Be in Great Britain when you claim (with exceptions for armed forces members and their families).
  • Have been in Great Britain for at least two of the last three years (exempt for refugees or those with humanitarian protection).
  • Be habitually resident in the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, or Channel Islands.
  • Not be subject to immigration control (unless a sponsored immigrant).
  • Not be receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP), Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA), or Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

Many eligible pensioners are not claiming the extra cash despite qualifying. The DWP encourages those who meet the criteria to apply to receive the financial support they are entitled to.
