Rock-solid avocados can be transformed into soft, creamy fruit in just 10 minutes with a simple trick from a chef. Mimi Morley, senior recipe developer at HelloFresh, shared the method for those in need of an immediate ripe avocado.
The hack involves wrapping the avocado tightly in foil, piercing it with a sharp knife, and submerging it in boiling water for 10 minutes. Morley cautioned that the avocado must be tightly wrapped to prevent water from seeping in.
After 10 minutes, the avocado should be soft enough to mash or slice. However, Morley noted that this method is only recommended for immediate use, as the texture can become chewy and the flavour less nutty once cooled.
For those with more time, Morley suggested ripening avocados naturally in a paper bag with a banana or apple. These fruits release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening without affecting texture or flavour.
When selecting avocados at the supermarket, look for a dark green or nearly black colour, a green nub under the stem, and a slightly soft feel to ensure they are close to ripeness.
