A cleaning expert has revealed a simple hack using a 2p coin to remove limescale from toilet bowls and other surfaces. Olly Cavner, Resident Services Manager at Essential Living, explained that the copper in the coin reacts chemically with limescale, helping to break it down.
Limescale is caused by hard water, which leaves chalky white deposits on taps, showers, kettles and toilets. In toilets, these deposits can turn brown or green due to minerals like iron and calcium, creating stubborn stains.
Cavner advised: “Simply hold the coin at a slight angle and rub the limescale build-up, almost like you’re chipping away.” Wetting the coin beforehand enhances the reaction. For tougher stains, he suggested using limescale spray or white vinegar.
“Let about half a cup of white vinegar sit in your toilet for a few minutes and then scrub with your toilet brush,” he added. Soda crystals can also be used for extra scrubbing power before flushing.
