Oven-Baked French Toast: Simple Method for Perfect Results

French toast can taste so much better when you use a simple oven-baking method instead of frying, according to cooking expert Michelle from Now Cook This. The traditional stovetop approach often leads to burnt exteriors and soggy interiors, but baking eliminates these common problems.

Why Oven-Baked French Toast Is Superior

Michelle said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!"

Baking allows you to prepare a large batch simultaneously without standing over the hob flipping bread. It also ensures even cooking, achieving a crispy texture without charring or raw centers. Plus, you avoid greasy stovetops and scrubbing burnt pans.

How to Effortlessly Make French Toast in the Oven

You will need: eight slices of brioche bread, four large eggs, 240ml of whole milk, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon), butter (optional), maple syrup (optional), and cooking spray.

To start, heat the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7) and generously coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray. Crack the eggs into a medium-sized bowl, then add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Combine thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Pour the egg mixture into the tray, then arrange the bread slices in a single layer on top. Allow the bread to rest for one minute to absorb the moisture, before flipping it over. Leave them for a few minutes until all the egg batter has been fully soaked up. Then, pop in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is delightfully crispy and golden.

Serve piping hot straight from the oven, drizzling with butter, maple syrup, or whatever toppings you fancy.
