Budget vs Premium: Rimmel Lip Butter Takes on Summer Fridays
Budget vs Premium: Rimmel Lip Butter Takes on Summer Fridays

Lip butters, the hybrid between balm, gloss, and treatment, are the latest beauty trend for 2025. Rimmel has joined the market with its Oh My Gloss! Butter Me Up range, priced at £7.99 and available exclusively at Superdrug, competing directly with the cult-favourite Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm at £23.

Both products are vegan and offer smooth texture, long-lasting hydration, and glossy finish. Rimmel uses 5% squalane, while Summer Fridays incorporates shea and murumuru seed butters. Each range includes clear and tinted shades, with Summer Fridays offering nine shades compared to Rimmel's six.

Price is the biggest differentiator, with a £15 gap. The quality difference does not justify the premium, according to a user who tested both. Rimmel holds its own and in some aspects outperforms the high-end option.

The applicator was a deciding factor: Rimmel's hard plastic convex wand is easy to clean and hugs the lips, while Summer Fridays' concave rubber tip can become messy. Rimmel also delivers a glossier, juicier finish, whereas Summer Fridays offers more pigment payoff with a subtler sheen. Neither product is sticky and both require infrequent reapplication.

Colour comparisons show Rimmel's Latte Delight and Summer Fridays' Vanilla Beige are nearly identical, though Vanilla Beige is slightly warmer. Rimmel's Red Velvet shade is surprisingly pigmented but transfers easily. The clear Vanilla Frost from Rimmel was deemed unremarkable, though its skincare benefits make it a good choice for those lacking a clear balm.
